New to iPod hacking

I just learned that you can hack an iPod.

First of all, on something I read, it said that when you hack you lose all the data in your iPod, that it restores itself to the factory settings. I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE MY MUSIC LIBRARY!! I have spent 2 years making it what it is and it would absolutely kill me to lose what I've got.

Having said that, if I WOULD NOT lose my music library, how is a good simple way to start hacking?

So you HAVE to HAVE a color iPod, huh? I've got the very last model that came out right before the colors and videos.
