does "verifying written data" physically do anything to the disc. Why do I want it checked? I can understand why I want to burn at 4x if its more reliable and will lead to higher quality long term dvd but what does verifying the data do?

Verifying the data makes sure that there are no errors on the dvd you backed up.It scans the dvd and checks if it was recorded with no problems, checks if the data is correctly recorded. It is usefull. But no,it doesnt do anything physicall to the disc.

what im sayin is, if i've successfully burned like 30 or so DVDs with no problems, does it matter if i keep it on or not.

Also, if there WAS a problem and verifying data found a problem, its not like it cud fix it rite?

There is always a chance of an error happening,we never know when.It cant correct the error because the dvd was burned already but if there is an error at least you know you will probably have to back it up again if you want a perfect copy.
