I have a NEC ND-4551A and its not working for me any more every time I put a disc in it just spins and doesn't read it. I don't want to fool with it any more I think cause I backup my DVD movies it did somethng to it self (I think its called one sheep or something)But what ever it doesn't work. And I'm looking for a new drive what would you guys recommend for that won't mess up on me for Bcking up my moives.

    I would like it ..
    - burn at x20
    - Book mark DVD's to DVDRom

1/2 sheep is for game backing up due to bad block copying, film/dvds are different (easier by far)

so - wont touch your drive! must be another thing

    got any error logs nero?

It could be that the burner is not getting enough power...
    Dirty lens...bad/incompatible discs...
    or plain messed up burner.
Was looking at the "likes" that you have...burning @X20?

    Agree.

I have two Lite-On's...work great. The one has burned over 2,000 titles and is still going.

Yeah, Nec and Pioneer for wahtever reason don't wanna play nice when it comes to booktyping. I have a Nec with mod. firm. There is tons of support for Pioneer burners-modified firmware for booktype/riplock...

I have a Nec 3550A. it needs modified firmware to booktype. been using Liggy's for about 2 yrs.It cannot booktype to DVD-ROM the single layer DVD+Rs, not with original firmware. Unless Nec released recently a new firmware update.

Nec and Pioneer are members of the DVD Forum. They are the promoters of the DVD-R format. It makes sense not to support booktyping the rival DVD+R to DVD-Rom, which makes them more compatible with the stand alone players.
