I just installed my second DVD burner. I have a Pioneer DVR-105 that I've used for years and is great, and just installed a Pioneer DVR-110D tonight so I can do some dual layer burning. I've created a wedding DVD that is larger than 4.7Gig, so I got the dual layer burner to allow me to burn the DVD.

I've heard you can have 2 DVD burners in one PC without problem, but my cousin said he did that and got the "blue screen of death" with his. I installed mine, and when I accessed Nero and Nero communicated with the new 110D drive, the blue screen came up. Is there a way to have both burners installed on the same pc? I don't care to burn on both at the same time, so if I can disable the burner part of the old drive and make it a DVD ROM only....would that clear up the problem and is that possible?

    Dell Dimension 8200
    2.6 Gig P4
    1 Gig Ram
    Win XP Home
    Pioneer DVR 105
    Pioneer DVR 110D

I have been running multiple burners on my pc for years with no problems.
    1.8Ghz P4
    1Gb DDR RAM
NEC ND 3500AD dvd+/-rw set as master
NEC ND 3520 dvd+/-rw set on cable select

Alot of factors have to be taken into consideration from processor reliability, drive configuration, available RAM and a good power supply. I wouldn't recommend a PSU under 350W since eveything in your tower is going to use up a decent amount of power consumption and always make sure your machine has adequate ventilation. Blowing out all the dust that collects in there once in awhile won't hurt either. As far as using one as DVD ROM only, that's up to you. You don't have to configure any settings in windows itself but your burning programs will give you the option when you set up your preferences.

I've got two dvd-rw drives in 2 of my pcs. The main pc is in my specs. I just swapped out my litey dvd-rom and put in my HP640c just to use as a reader and the lightscribe feature.

My backup athlon 3000+,half gb pc2700,and has the benq 1620-over 2000+ burns, and the very first dvd burner I got-Khypermedia +8x.That pc used to give me some major blue and black screens. She's fine now after reformatting it/new mobo/new ram/and the antec true 400 w ps helped big time! Some of those cheap powersupplies just won't cut it.

    Both pcs configured the same:

Primary master and slave are 2 hard drives
Secondary master is my reading dvd-rw and secondary slave is my writing dvd-rw which all 3 pcs have benqs!

Some peeps will have the burner as master and the reader as slave. They perform the same both ways for me.

3rd pc only has room for 1 otpical drive,as the spare bay is being used by an extra harddrive.

Your specs look decent, Maybe the drive that's hooked up in the center of the ide ribbon is set on slave-and you may have to hook it up c/s or vice versa? Some pcs call for the cable select.

Double check those ribbons and power cables. Some can pull out very easily.

It worked ok with the Pioneer 105-single drive: Pull that drive out,and replace it with the 110 set as master. Then give her a shot.

Sometimes a bad drive may leave the factory from time to time.It happens with all the different manufacturers.Hooking up the 110 as a single drive should clarify if that is the issue.

I don't know about the disabling the dvd-rom part of the dvd-rw drive.

Well, I got the burner to recognize and burn. My first problem was that I was using Stomp Record Now Max (an older version that must not know that dual layer DVDs exist b/c it doesn't support that option). Another burning program I tried supported dual layer, but the trial version on it had expired. The burner came with Nero, and after installing it I tried the command Nero DriveSpeed and Nero CD-DVD Speed (not knowing what they did and wanting to explore)- and that's when I got the blue screens. I realized it was the first time my PC had tried to get info from the burner. Later, I went into Nero Smart Start and burned a DVD file from that user panel, and it seems to work fine (although I'm still a little weary and it hasn't gained my complete confidence yet).

Another thread said Dell's like cable select, so I changed both drives to cable select this morning...we'll see. My power supply is the Dell standard 350watts. However, someone awhile ago when researching said Dell ranks very conservatively on their power supplies, and a 350 watt is guaranteed. Others that rank theirs at say 500 watts just mean they can peak at 500 watt, but probably run at lower watts like 400 or something. So, in reality, the 350 watt Dell would be ranked around a 400 or something like that on another brand powersupply.

Thanks for your help- if I could just get my software to be up to speed for DVD authoring now.

Uninstall Nero InCD feature and be amazed at how much of your system's resources are no longer being bogged down.
    InCD= memory hog
