Hi i'm new here. I joined because I cant find an answer to a question I had. I use a cam corder to capture footage and its stored in MPEG2 Format. I then convert it into MPEG4 DIVX/XVID. The 50 minute file I am using comes out to 400mb with single pass encode. If I use 2 pass encode it goes to 2 gigs! How the heck do I make this smaller? Its set to 2 pass encode 1000bps,I dont want to lower this because it will look bad, wont it? Also I use AVG Video editor. Are there any good converting programs out there that join files and save them in DIVX and can do 2pass encode? I really want a good quality video with a decently small file size. I see this everywhere I just have no idea how to do this. Thanks!
I'm not familiar with the video editor, but somewhere, you have to set the bit rate for the second pass. Both Xvid and DivX have their own configuration screens. For example : from the Start button/all programs/xvid/configure encoder you'll see the screen I'm talking about. It should be accessible from within the application.
Thank you so much! Problem solved! I actually bought additional programs and wasted money when the answer was so simple. Thanks again, great site
Opps my mistake noto doen totally. I got the file size down but its still big. I calculated how many bps I needed for the filse size I want but the file is still bigger. Anything else I can do to lower filze size?
Ok here it the info I have now, I am starting to understnad this but mabey someone can fully help me out. I have a video that is 50 minutes long. I am using Xvid. So I did this: First enabled 2 pass encode. found out how many kbs in 350 mbs and put it in "configure converter" target size. Then I put the video lenght at 50 minutes on 25 frames per second pal. Underneath the time contraints there is a thing that says size(kbs) you cant change this value. i am unsure what this value does. It says 322026. For the bitrate it tells me 879. Audio 96kbs. My goal is to have a 50 minute video that is 350 mb (Basically backing up my VCR tapes from years ago of shows I like). In my video editor I put I set it to Xvid, set the values to what I explained, 879 kbs. And in the end the video still came out over 400mb. What am I doing wrong? Also how can I find out what kbs to put if I play around with the size of the screen?
Drag your oversized video to virtualdub and click on file/ file information. What is the data rate for audio and video? Is it what you set it to?
For audio 128 like it should be for video it says 1368, which is weird because the video quality is already pretty crapp and still big filesize
Why don't you attempt the conversion in Virtualdub ? You get completely manual control, may help to pin down the problem...
