hey guys, i was hoping you could help me out with something... i have a dream, it may not be a real dream, but thats not the point... i want to put all my dvds onto a hard drive and play on my tv... i intend on purchasing an apple macbook to which i would attach an external hard drive and use front row to display my movies and select from the list what movie to watch and then watch it.

my dvd collection is fairly extensive, but i need advice on a program to convert these movies to a video format that i will be able to use for these purposes... I was thinking about DivX, but do not know if this is the best option or what program i can use... which is why i turn to you guys, thanks in advance for your help!

If you have a pc computer right now. Use dvdfabHDdecryter(free) to rip your dvd's, next shrink and save your files as ISO with dvdshrink3.2(free), if dvdshrink cannot open the files use fixvts first on those files. To me, if dvdshrink cannot shrink my files than they will not be good to convert to XVID.

Next use fairuse 2.6 lite(free) to process those ISO's into XVID files. Fairuse is the simplest and best way to get your dvd's to XVID files and for me has never given me an audio sync problem in over 100 conversions. XVID is similar to DIVX, but from my expierence XVID will play in every software video player I tried them on, DIVX has some compatability issues on some players. Another thing with Fairuse is that you can batch process several ISO's at a time, I usually do 3 at a time and it will turn your computer off when it's done. I bought the full version because I like to encode my files to be at least 1000mb for the better quality, lite version is limited to 700mb.

Why convert them, leave them in AVI format and copy them to a USB hard drive. Some of the newer players have USB jacks on then just for this. Plug it into the player and select the movie you want and play it directly to your TV. The Philips dvp5982 is the top of the line for comparion. Look it up.

Pray to God that your HDD never crashes full of your dvds.

Then please, oh please why did they invent RAID technology if this sort of thing I pray about doesn't/can't happen? Remember the immortal words of Andy Grove(one of the founders of Intel)

BTW vamsilak, how do you explain this thread (yours) about putting 2Tbs of movies to disc?(especially if HDD's don't fail)
