    Um…hi.

If you couldn’t tell, I have a question (problem, more like) I need help with. I read through all the stuff I think I was supposed to on this board, but it’s all like—woah—a foreign language or something. So, if there’s anyone out there who’ll be a translator and dumb it down for me even more than it already has been, I’d appreciate it.

Okay, so, my problem: I have a bunch of these “16x DVD+R” disks by Memorex (I think), and I have a bunch of episodes of my favorite shows downloaded onto my computer. In the properties of the episodes it says that the type of file is “RealAudio / RealVideo VBR”; dunno if that’s important. Now, I want to be able to put these episodes onto the disks I got, and hopefully have them work on my DVD player. I’ve tried already, and the disks run fine on my computer, as expected. However, from what I understand, DVD+R are sort of temperamental and don’t work on many DVD players. At least, they don’t work on mine. I figure it’s cause the DVD player is over two or so years old, so it wont read the disks because they’re a sorta new thing? My DVD player is a “Sanyo DWM-390” (again, I don’t know if this means anything).

Now, my real questions: Is there a way to change the format of the disks so that they will work on this player? If I can’t use this player, WHAT KIND OF PLAYER SHOULD I GET? And, if I can’t use these disks, what disks can I use? Will I be able to play them like DVDs on other devices, such as PS2? Also, I would like to know what other software stuff I might need, and what kinds you people suggest.

    Thanks a bunch.

The problem is most likely your discs and, maybe, your burning speed. Memorex have the worst reputation of any media. Use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or any made in Japan and keep your burns around 4x or 1/2 the rated speed of the media. Here is a link to media rating;: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm I may be wtong but I believe that DVD-R has the edge over DVD+R but +R can be Booktyped so that they are seen as a DVD Rom. Other than this, + and - can't be changed. Actually, I prefer the +. For encoding and burning your episodes to DVD to view on your TV, have a look at VSO's ConvertXtoDVD. It's all you will need, excellent quality, fast, easy to use and gives a basic menu but the trial will put a watermark in your video.

You did not say exactly how you took the “RealAudio / RealVideo VBR” files and placed them on the DVD.

If you did not do a conversion from this format to the DVD-Video format then you will not be able to play it on your DVD player.
You can watch pretty much any kind of video format with your PC so the disc would play in that.
Which is why I have to ditto what mistycat says:
This program should be able to convert RealVideo into DVD-Video compliant files.
ConvertXtoDVD's "Supported Files" lists "Real media (with support DLL)" as a supported file type for converting.
    Give it a try.

Wow. I didn't think I'd get so much help this fast...but, I have a few more questions now. If I get VSO's ConvertXtoDVD, my episodes will be in the right format or whatever to be played on my TV, right? So...does that guarantee that it will work with the DVD player I have? Thanks a bunch for all the help so far, by the way.

ConvertXtoDVD will burn your DVD so that they can be played on your your standalone and TV as long as your player supports the format you use. For example, only one of 2 players I have supports VCD, SVCD and neither support RW but they both support + or -. Check your manual for your player or google it.
