I just got introduced to the complex Matroska envelope. It is dual audio (eng/jap) with no subs. What I have been trying to do is decompress the .avi, retain the japanese track, and add english subs. I have gone thru a few different programs to no avail (avi2vcd decompressor, virtual dub mod, etc). However, I was able to extract the video only (by accident) in virtual dub mod. All i need now is to extract the japanese soundtrack, which I haven't found a solution to. BUt I would like to go a step farther. I have been successful in decompressing the english sondtrack. Is it possible to create subtitles from this soundtrack (mind you, i have no subtitle information to begin with) without manually addid them in? In short, I am looking for a program that will "read" my decompressed audio file created with avi2wav and create a subtitle file (.sub, .srt, or something compatible) that I can permanently add to the avi file. As a side question, which probably doesn't belong here, but I don't feel like creating another post, can I go straight from .mkv to mpeg2 compliant (DVD) and retain all audio streams for dvd authoring (as well as add in the subs like above) but make them selectable?
Ok, update time... I was able to not only from extract the two audio streams seperately from the .mkv container, but I was also able to retrieve the subtitles as well (.srt), I have gone through at least 4 various guides, including the ones posted here for subtitling avi files. NONE WORKED! No matter what subtitle format I had it didn't work. does *anybody* have an inkling how to put the decompressed subtitles from the mkv file into the decompressed avi file? I am getting very upset that none of the subtitling programs work. I don't know if it is the mkv subtitle decompressed stream or just the programs themselves. any help would be appreciated.
Nobody willing to offer their .02 cents worth? or did somebody finally do something over somebody's head?
You might try the AVI-subtitler from HJRSoft. It's free to download alont with a subtitle tool. Supportet formats for movies are mpeg & avi. Supported formats for subtitle files are srt & MicroDVD(text) Use search string "avisubtitler" in your browser and the link to HJRSoft will appear. Better hurry - developement of the proggy is discontinued.
An update!! HJRSoft = www.sunpoint.net/~hjrsoft/as.html Download DivXSubtitleTool & AVISubtitler Open DST, Open your .avi, open your subtitle .srt > click tools, open subtitler, mark framerate etc. save your .avi (new name) as easy as that
Hi. I tried the above program...avisubtitler. I tried to add subs from an .srt file onto a 650mb film, using full frame(uncompressed) mode. But the file output is almost 2gb, so I stopped! Is there any way to do this and keep the original file size?
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/userguides/153058.php This is probably the easiest way of adding permanent subtitles to VCD, SVCD, DVD or AVI/DivX/XviD for you. No frameserving required. Good luck.
