I am using Adobe Photoshop CS4 ( I can use cs3 as well). I make a image and then delete the background, so that there is an irregular shape, I then save it as jpg but there is a white background when I open it. How do I keep it as jpg but with an irregular shape???

You don't. If you want to use the image with the web, you need to save it as a GIF.

First: Delete all the unwanted layers until you are left with just the image you require and the default chequered back-ground.

Then do a, Save As and select PNG from the drop-down menu.

Only if you save the image as a JPeg then USE THE PENTOOL TO CUT THE IMAGE OUT AFTERWARD!
