I did all of the below several times - except the trend micro piece - with no luck, but thank you, very thorough and very well written. Current symptoms include (1) Windows firewall shut off thru group policy, (2) Windows automatic updates turned off, (3) network connection terminated 2-3inutes after enabling it. Any thoughts ?
Hey vans12, Personally I haven't run into this one yet, your best bet would be to post a HJT log here & hope we can catch the nasty. But 1st your going to need to run Trend Micro as that's a very important step. Get your friend to do the following: Please post a HJT (HijackThis) log, to do so, follow theese simple instructions: Download HJT from HERE Please make a new folder to put your HijackThis.exe into. Anywhere on your hard drive is fine other than your Desktop or the Temp folder. We suggest you use something like "C:\Program Files\HijackThis" but feel free to use any name. See here for specific instructions and screen shots to help: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm This is to ensure it makes the necessary backups for recovery if needed. Run the HijackThis.exe file and choose to run a "Full System Scan And Save Logfile"in a matter of seconds you should see a notepad document pop up (the logfile), copy and paste thar log file into a reply here.

Thanks, missed that last action. Submitted, but all actions they recommended did not solve the problem of hihacking my internet connection and shutting off automatic updates from MS. Looks like flattening it is the next step :-(

Right now, im in step 7, I couldn't do the online scan as my connection wouldnt stay active for long enough.
