I want to convert divx to vob. I figured that I would convert it to mpeg first via TMPGEnc, then from there to vob. But I can't use TMPGEnc DVD Author because it only works on Win2000 or WinXP, not Win98 which I have. So what else can I use?
Actually TMPGEnc DVD Author does work with Win98 as I have three systems running 98 that I use it on all the time.... the only thing that sucks is that windows 98 won't support files greater than 4 gig in size, though that is rarely a problem for me.
If it works, great! I never tried it. I had a look at their website and it said: It seemed rather clear to me that it wouldn't work. Maybe they just don't want to officially support anything but those OS. I'm downloading it now and will give it a try. Actually it does matter. That confirms that it can work under win98. (Unless you were referring to it being win98se... which is what I refer to as win98. Just like I refer to win95b as win95.)
TMPEGEnc DVD Author does work with 98 (I use it myself with 98SE), it's just the write-to-disc feature that is disabled. You can only use the write-to-disc feature in w2k or above, so for 98 you will need to create your title set (vobs etc) then use another burning app, like Nero, to burn it to a DVD disc. Don't worry about the 4gig limit either as each vob for a DVD (usually 5 for most DVD's) will only be around 1gig max. You won't have one BIG vob file.
That doesn"t really make much Differance because if you are useing Tmpgenc DVD author to make a DVD your Source Files usually are 4gb+ Mpeg2 files...I know Mine are ,I usually end up with a 4.15gb Mpeg2 file and a 175mb AC3 file, so with a Fat 32 System you will allways have to make sure your Mpeg2 files are less than 4gb or you have to cut them in Half which is a Bit of a Hassle....But if all you got is Win 98 then you gotta deal with it....Cheers_X_X_X_X_X_[small]It"s better to be Pissed Off than Pissed On!!![/small]
Yes, that is another problem <g>, but it doesn't really matter what authoring software you're using as your source encoded video files could be over 4gig with or without them. For those of us on FAT32 it's a case of either working out a bitrate to bring the file down to just below 4gig or outputting it to two or more 'sections' (not cutting after, which is a pain with MPEG-2, but saving to two or more smaller movie sections). I've done a full D1 PAL encode of a 98 minute movie with a video bitrate of 4.9Mbps and an audio bitrate of 192Kbps and been under the 4gig limit, and the quality was very nice too, more than good enough for me. There are many commercial DVD's that don't go much higher than 5Mbps. I've also done a couple of movies that were 120+ minutes long. For those I chose my start/stop points for the first 60 minutes or so(using an area that fades is best, if you can) then selected my start/stop points for the second 60 minutes or so and out putted them to two separate files using a bitrate of 8Mbps. Then I loaded both of them in to TMPEGEnc DVD Author as chapters and there was absolutely no noticeable pause between the two at all.)
Or you could buy Mount Everything, this allows you to use the NTFS filesystem under Win98, ie there is no file limit (you can even mount the Linux filesystem if you would rather that) http://www.mount-everything.com/
