Hi all; I've got this older machine in my son's room, it is a Athlon XP 1600+, with a gig of DDR and a 40 HDD and a 20gig HD. It is on an ASUS A7M-266 I installed Windows XP on it it runs good. Problem is everytime the machine is powered off or rebooted it looks like the boot record and/or mbr gets corrupted, and I get this ominous "PRESS ANY KEY TO REBOOT" DOSish screen. If I boot with the Winxp CD and launch a recovery console, and run fixmbr and fixboot all is well for one reboot then back to hell. I'm not sure what is causing this to happen, and it is anoying, normally I might just say ok don't reboot, or as little as possible, but the PC is in his room and I have to shut it down at night as it is too loud. Anyone know what might becausing the boot record and/or mbr to get hosed all the time. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Kali
i will try to reinstall windows again. and run all your updates, it might be that your hd is failing, there a few free to try software on the net to check the integrity of your drive. try one and see how it goes. at this day and age you can pic up a bigger and faster drive for less than 100 usd and you got a good machine to last you a few more years. Good Luck.
