AMD 64 socket type

    what socket type is the AMD 64 bit CPU's, just for when chosing a new mobo

    Socket 754 is the current standard.
    These motherboards supports only single-channel RAM, but this is not really a problem for a typical user.
    The newer socket 939 supports both Athlon 64 and Athlon 64FX CPUs, and dual-channel RAM.
    Athlon 64 on socket 939 is the first AMD to equal or exceed P4 memory bandwidth. (Although very powerful performers overall, this had always been a weak point for AMD).
    In tests of Doom3, Athlon 64 slaughtered P4EE chips that cost twice as much ;-)
    An Asus K8V-X mobo plus an Athlon 64 2800 would be a great combination, costing $319 CDN/AUS
    Which is only 128 Pounds Sterling or $240 US.
    You could spend as much on two sticks of RAM (but, you need only one) LoL

    thanks for the heads up i've ordered
    AMD (Newcastle) Athlon 64 Bit 3000
    Abit KV8PRO SKT754-via K8T800 Pro
    which i hope will be fast.
