A first look at the Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones

We take an early look around an early preview of Microsoft's new phone operating system.

Microsoft released the first preview of Windows 10 for phones a few hours ago. A lot of Windows Phone users won't be able to try it out, though, because the preview is only supported on a limited number of devices right now.

Fortunately, we have some suitable phones to hand—I was using a Lumia 830—and have been taking a look at the preview.

Announcing the first build of Windows 10 Technical Preview for Phones
I’m excited to announce that our first build of Windows 10 Technical Preview for phones is available now for Windows Insiders! The team here has been working hard to get this out to you and we know that you’ve been waiting patiently since we announced that it was coming. This is a long post, but there is a lot of important information so if you want to jump in and install the preview on your phone I really encourage you to read it completely.

Since we’re building Windows 10 to be the same core platform for PCs, tablets and phones, it should be no surprise that participating in the program for phones will work pretty much the same way it has been working for PCs.

    • Join the Windows Insider Program
    • Register your device to receive builds as over the air updates
    • Builds will come to you automatically as they are ready, after being validated by engineers at Microsoft and used on their own phones
    • Use the built-in Windows Feedback app to send us problem reports and suggestions
    • Updates will continue all the way up to the final build that goes out to all customers
    • You can roll your phone back to the previous OS any time you’d like

These are the devices that you can run Windows 10 for phones today
Earlier today, Microsoft announced that the Windows 10 for phones preview is available for download. One caveat with the release is that it will not run on all Windows Phones that are currently out in the market.

For those of you who want to try out the OS, you can check to see if your device is eligible by checking the list below:

    • Lumia 630
    • Lumia 635
    • Lumia 636
    • Lumia 638
    • Lumia 730
    • Lumia 830
Understandably, this will make a few of you upset. Rightfully so, as you want to try out the next-gen OS but Microsoft has not made it available for your phone even though you have been a loyal Windows Phone user. Of course, supporting every phone out of the gate would have been setting expectations a bit high but we know this will not appease those who have been told they need to wait a bit longer.

The good news, if your device is not listed, is that they will be expanding the list of supported phones with future releases but there is not a definitive timeline for these updates.
