Another stupid HD question

Ok its finaly time to instal a new HDD. I now that there are plenty of tuts out there but I have not found any for the Format New HDD option on AID v.4 10.

How do I do it with that option? Do I unplug the XBOX from the wall and just swap out the HDs then boot the AID disc and select the option to format it followed by backing up the XBOX dash and eeprom?

I just got a new PC and took the 160 seagate out of the old one so I realy want to drop it in without messing up the factory HDD so I can use it again if I need to in the future.

You can't just "swap" HDDs like that. Remember the HDD is locked by a key that is matched to the eeprom on the motherboard. Your factory HDD comment is confusing to me, are you talking about the console or the PC? If the console then this is what I did: I softmodded my original xbox HDD, performed the HDD swap mod on a 320G HDD. And then restored the original HDD and put it up just incase. That way if something should ever happen I have the original to recover from any problem. I haven't tried the format option from AID. I'm wondering if that is to create and format F: and G: partitions. Because after I swapped HDD I still had to go back and creat partitions F: and G: and then format them.

The format option is to format any HDD to use be it new or used not ust F and G. As a mater of fact it says that sometimes it wont format F and G andneeds to be done again.

As far as the rest of the info, thanks but I think I am now the one thats confused.

I am talking about the factory XBOX HDD can it be removed with the XBOX off and unplugged without locking it the wrong way?

My new PC's HDD does not have IDE its not ATA. So untill I can get to a PC with a IDE hdd I cant do it the common way.

Okay, first are you hard or soft modded?

Second, What are you trying to accomplish?

A HDD drive upgrade still needs the image from the original working drive, well more importantly the eeprom information. So that is why you ftp the image over to a computer, and build the ISO, including the eeprom information, and then build the drive from your computer, lock it and then put into the xbox. You still have to be able to FTP from the xbox, so some or part of a soft mod has to happen (to the extent that you need to set up ftp and then get the eeprom file). If you unplug your xbox, and just swap out the HDD then try to boot from the AID disk, you'll get a HDD error, because the xbox will think your hdd is crashed, because, first and formost it looks for the eeprom data. If I understand correctly, the sequence works kind of like this. Power on, BIOS loads and reads HDD info and then boots; disk if present or dash if not.

Now if you try a hot swap, you're still in the mess, because you need the eeprom info, remember the drive and bios are matched from the info in the eeprom file. You always need the eeprom file. That's why it is the first thing backed up on a softmod mod. If you loose it and have problems, you'll need an eeprom reader or a hardmod to fix.

Okay I forget how to edit, so don't beat me up responding to my response.

    Delmorte:
AID is primarily a tool for hardmodders. Yes there are parts that are useful to softmodders. The format function is for hardmodders.

IF, you fall into that category then here is your directions:

After your xbox is hardmodded, you want a bigger hdd to store games, emulators and apps.

Here is what you need to do:

    - Download autoinstaller disk like AID, Slayer, SID, etc... from bittorent sites. Unrar it you will see the iso inside. Burn the ISO to CD-R/DVD-R.

    - put it in xbox. If you burn it correctly, xbox will load this disk.
    - Leave the autoinstaller disk inside dvd drive. Turn off xbox and open it. Install big hdd. Turn on xbox.
    - Xbox load the autoinstaller disk. Choose format hdd. Then install dashboard and apps.
    - When done, eject the autointaller disk and reboot xbox.

    Enjoy!!!

Remember the hardmod chip lets you do things, that the softmodders can't, so I hope this helps you and I didn't confuse you more.

I am only softmodded. I guess I will just get a chip but after I install the new HDD and format it like you said do I then transfer (FTP ) the EEPROM or do I need to do that somehow before I even put the disc in the drive and put the new HDD in?

It's really simple.. first FTP the entire contents of your xbox drive over to your PC.. everything..

Then look for a eeprom.bin file in what you have transferred (it's usually in E:\dashboard\backup\eeprom)

Then download xboxhdm v1.9 and follow the readme as to how to build a drive building disk.. it will be real easy because you have all the files you need right there on your pc.

Run xboxhdm exactly as it says in the instructions to build your new drive and lock it..

pop the new drive in your xbox and it will boot smart.. then use sid4 or whatever to make your other partitions.. F:\ G:\ x,y,z etc and install the rest of the applications..

Couldn't be easier, but the first step is always to back up your eeprom, and get that file on to once only media.. burn the file onto a cd with a full backup of your c and e drives...(you can put c on one disk and e on another. a dvd even.. because softmod e drives have a lot of data on them.. games and all sorts.. do it twice

A suggestion if I may be so bold?? Do you have a surplus old 10 gig hdd.. if you do have a practice on it first so you get the procedure down and dusted.. Most pc shops (the backstreet kind) have boxes of the things.. they are too small for pc use these days, and they will usually give you a couple of them if you ask nicely ;)

if i may add my twopenneth worth as a 'noob'. ive just
upgraded to a modest 40GB HDD. i have a softmod xbox and
using the latest AID 4.13 disk i installed chimp2.4 as
an app. followed the tuts for it (hotswap the DVD) and
used it to clone my stock HD. power off, swap HDD and
it was all good. took about 20 to 30 minutes to do. if
you dont know your eeprom or where its backed up you tell
chimp to look at the motherboard when it asks.

I have my eeprom, I have my whole entire HDD backed up. I have a huge HDD in my new pc but I cant use it to hot swap. My HDD in this new PC is not conected via IDE! Unless I get a adapter for my HDD I wanna use in my XBOX I cant just put it in and do a hotswap and I really dont like hotswapping anyway. I messed up 2 HDDs for my XBOX in the past doing that. But now thinking of it I have a friend with a chipped XBOX.

Could I just use his XBOX and format my HDD with my disc then FTP my eeprom in and take it out and then put it in my XBOX?

you must have SATA in your PC then i guess.
i still say you could do it with chimp2.4.
this goes on the xbox as an app. open up the
xbox and 'loosen' the IDE thats in the DVD,
use a molex 'y' splitter by the way so that
your new HDD has power from the xbox. turn
on the xbox and activate chimp. you then
take the IDE off the DVD and plug it into
the new HDD. Chimp will format and clone
the old drive onto the new and use the
eeprom off the motherboard of the xbox
to lock the new drive. anything else after
that you could FTP over as and when.

I took chimp 2.4 off of my AID disc and ran it. I got a green screen and that was about it.

    Now what?

I got XBOX v 1.6. Now what do I got to do? I wish I could just ship it out and have someone help me out but I guess the eeprom wouldnt let that happen. I feel like shooting something!

XBOX CHIMP 2.6 Tutorial for the Xbox v1.6
    (Written by:montauk198@yahoo.com)

First off, I had no help and had to go into this blind because unlike this tutorial all the rest of them told you how to setup then said "The rest is up to you" which is BS.
    So bear with me..

NOTE: When I used Telnet the display was messed up and halfway understandable..

Now this is what I did...Do what you will...

    SETUP:

XB: On your Dashboard access the system and goto Network
-Set IP to anything above 192.168.0.4
-Check the box on HTTP Proxy
-Set your Port from 21 to 23

    XB:
    -Do the usual opening.T20,T15,T10.....(Torx Drive)
-Plug a y-connector on the power to have power to both HDD's...(Hard Drive Disks)
-Slightly Remove the Ribbon from the DVD-Rom...(Easier Access)
-Have the original HDD jumpered to Master...
-Have the new HDD jumpered to Slave...

    Accessing by Telnet
(*Note: Make your XB IP STATIC and anything above 192.168.0.4)
1.XB - Run Chimp ( Screen will fuzz up and go green)
2.PC - Access Command Prompt (Start/Run type CMD press Enter)
3.PC - Command Prompt type telnet 192.168.0.3 press enter (username: root Pass: xbox)
(*NOTE: characters for pass will not appear and it took me a few times for it to work.)
4.PC - Now you will be at the chimp menu. (mine is kinda garbled but the important things you can see)

    Chimp Menu guide:
(*NOTE: use number keys, arrow keys and ENTER only!)
    1. Press 1, enter - It will scan, when its done youll see exit just press enter and you will be taken back to the Main Menu.

    2. Press 2, enter - it will say about to scan press enter, after scan press enter

    3. Then it will Say - Choose yes will wipe out and reformat this disk Press left arrow, then Enter.

    4. HD cloning from /dev/hda to /dev/hdb menus, press 1 (full disk), then Enter

    5. HD cloning from /dev/hda to /dev/hdb menus, press 1 (blind), then Enter

6.NOW it will have C-drive and E-drive listed (these are the c: and e: that you are acustomed to ftp'ing to and from) Start with C, JUST PRESS ENTER.

    7. IT will Say (DEVICE CLONING) THEN (CLONING FROM /dev/hda to /dev/hdb with either 50 or 51 next to them.(*Note: on the left I notice it counting up ##+0 Records in and ##+0 Records out, the ## is the number that goes up, mine goes up to about 500+1 and its done)

8.REPEAT STEPS 2-7 BUT THIS TIME INSTEAD OF C PRESS DOWN TO E AND PRESS ENTER.

9.When that is all done, at Main Menu Press 3 to lock slave, press enter.

10.Xbox Hd Locking tools Menu, press 1 (from Motherboard), press Enter.

11.Password Generated from Motherboard, choose yes to lock, Press Left, then Enter.

12.It will Say Done!!!!!! Just Press enter to go back to the Main Menu..

At Main Menu Press 6, then Enter to Exit back to the command Promtp...

Now POWER OFF YOUR XBOX, SWITCH THE JUMPER PIN TO MASTER ON THE NEW FRESHLY CHIMPD HDD AND PUT YOU BOX BACK TOGETHER WITH THE NEW HDD IN PLACE...

    ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    hope this helps

when you set your static IP on the xbox
make sure you set it in the softmod, the
ms dash and any other area where you can.
i set it up in my softmod only the first
time i set my IP. so if i ran XBMC it
couldnt connect as it wasnt itself setup.
    just a thought.

thats a bugger! best thing you can do then
is borrow a computer which has IDE headers
    on the motherboard........are they already
phasing out IDE then? although your PC is
connected using a SATA header is there no
    IDE headers on the motherboard?

I have one but to disconnect the OEM HDD so I don't slip up and accidental use it I have to remove all kinds of crap. I guess sooner or later I have to bite the bullet but I am just looking for a nice smooth easy way to install since I really grind my teeth thinking about hot swaps since I messed up the other HDD's in the past trying to fix some error codes.

I think I have it down.

I have a friend with a Chipped xbox.

I think I am going to back up his EEPROM on my PC, place the disc in, tear it apart. Unplug it and all and remove his HDD and replace with mine. Then boot it all back up running the disc with the XBOX set to auto run DVD on start up, format using my eeprom back up and replace his all with config magic.
