Hoping someone can really help me out with my new Sony desktop: PCV-RX624 (P4, 2.80GHz, 512MB, Win XP-Home) fitted with a Sony DW-U12A DVD +/- RW drive. The story so far: I ditched the bundled Premiere 6 LE and upgraded to Premiere 6.5, hooked up a Canopus ADVC100 DV converter and can capture rock-solid analogue footage using either front or rear firewire ports from my VHS video with no dropped frames. Great! Here’s the snag I hadn’t expected: I want to ditch Sony’s bundled (and very limited) “Click to DVD” burning software and replace it with DVD Workshop. I’ve tried uninstalling Click to DVD first and then installing DVD-WS, or simply keeping Click to DVD installed and adding DVD-WS. Either way, DVD-WS freezes every time I hit the final “Burn Disc” option. I also looked at uninstalling Sony’s associated DV-Gate (movie assemble software) and Movie Shaker (movie editor software) in case there was some link with Click to DVD and find I am unable to – I get the error message: “Error extracting support files: The system cannot find the file specified” when trying to remove both programs. Sony’s on-line and phone support seems completely unable to help but I can’t believe I’m stuck with only ONE burning software for the otherwise excellent DW-U12A. A separate question (or is it related?): I will ultimately want to install NERO 5.5 for burning CDs as the bundled VERITAS software can’t write using the UDF system that I can share with my Mac. If I ever get DVD-Workshop to run properly, will I be able to run it side by side with Nero?
Great Question I have SONY VIAO PC & SONY DRX 500UL external burner I never use Sony Softwear, could not get it to work properly. Until today DVD X Copy Xpress was the bomb, but run into few problems trying to upgrade.
All issues now successfully resolved: DVD Workshop needed the Ulead on-line patch update - even though their website doesn’t list the Win XP problems I’d experienced as part of the fix, it seems to have solved my “freeze” problem and now happily burns DVDs and VCDs. Nero 5.5 also successfully installed and running alongside DVD Workshop without a hitch and offering the detailed options I wanted on the format it uses to write to CD-RW. I did, in the end, uninstall “Click to DVD”. Although it wasn’t conflicting, it is far too limited a program to be of any real use. I am now a satisfied Sony PC customer but why-oh-why do they bother bundling such crap software with a burner as good as the DW-U12A? It’s like fitting a Rolls Royce with an AM-only radio!
Agree !! Thanks for the info, just yesterday the upgrade of a great program, sorta put my DVD copy process out to pasture until someone can help me resolve conflicts and new bugs. Finally, all was working fine copy to one disk and all, with just one click ! so the saga goes.....Again Thanks for the update, surely it can help a newby like me.
One more question, what programs or methods do you use for VCD ? I am asking because I am wondering if one program works best with SONY burners, considering the provided softwear is not that user friendly.
I've only tried making one VCD using DVD Workshop SE... (nice program, lays out all the options really neatly) it worked fine, although I have to say I wasn't too impressed by VCD quality, (certainly not up to VHS standrads) assuming my trial was typical. The VCD also refused to play back on a 3-yr old Sony DVD player, even though the machine claims in big letters on the front to be VCD compatible.
