I have this DVD thats like 7.3gb and when i used dvdshrink to compress it enough to be able to fit it on one dvd. and sure enough the end result of the quality of the movie came out like crap. so now i'm wondering if i can just split the movie into two dvd's. would it work if i just make a rip fo the dvd and then burn half the files using nero onto one dvd and the other half onto another?? or would i need some other software if its possible.

You can do it with Shrink in the Re-Author mode -

If you want super simple use DVDFab (Free 30 day trial available) or DVD XCopy (purchase required)

You can do it very easily with DVD shrink as ScubaPete suggested. If its a movie and you want to split movie/features, using the reauthor mode and creating a seperate disc for each. If its episodes, try using TMPGEnc DVD Author.

after burning disc 1 i still notice the quality is still somewhat crappy. is this normal that the quality can't come out perfect when split into two discs? i used nero to burn and ofcourse dvd fab to do the splitting part.

the quality should be the same as the original if split to two discs and not compressed.

What Oriphus said, should be the same as what you are using for an original :)

If you started out with an AVI file expect what you have.

If it's an original DVD it will be fine -
