okay people i just feel as though this something that needs to be said for the benefit of the unwitting people who want to get broadband. now i know that AOL looks all good and fancy with its so called "advanced virus protection" and unlimited broadband for only £14.99 well people its not ok you see you may be thinking that your getting a good deal, no limits on how much u download, bit of free software but the fun all ends as soon as you try to get on the internet. first of all it will connect fine and youll think "yay i have the broadband ill go start doing some downloading" then about 10 seconds later youll notice that internet explorer is taking a very long time to load that page that you were just on a second ago or youll be talking on messenger and all of a sudden youll sign out. AOLs dialler software will tell you that its still connected, so youll try and sign back in or hit refresh, but nothing will work. that is because in actual fact you arent connected at all. infact you will get this very very very frequently - and im not just going on my own experience here im going on the experience of a whole nation full of aol users. AOL does not and will not stay connected to the internet it is a waste of time and money. i myself had aol broadband for about 3 days before cancelling as the longest period of time id stayed connected was just 15 minuites. AOLs software is the cause of the problem - its incapable of holding a connection and the best thing is they actually charge you more than the value of your broadband so that you can have use of this software. So dont get AOL no matter how inticing it may seem. it will be the worst mistake youll ever make - espescially if you keep it past the end of your 14 day trial period as you wont be able to cancel it for a whole year without paying some cash upfront.
Exactly why I would never get an ISP with a 12-month contract, it's dodgy. I have heard that it is really bad.. I'm on Virgin.Net ISP, and their really great, 2.2mbps connection, but with 20gb download limit, aint so bad though.. -Mike
I am on AOL. Nothing but problems. Ordered their 512k initially. They give you a five day trial on dial-up while they configure your line. Bull. Because three months later I am still on the dial-up and obviously very cheesed off at my 5kb/s max dload speed. Eventually I got online, but it is a constant nightmare. I have to keep reinstalling ACS (AOL Connectivity Services. I probably re-install every other time I log in. But they are upgrading me to 2mb in the coming month, and I get great speeds, so it seems a littletoomuch hassle to swich - especially as I [bold]do[/bold] get unlimited downloads
i had aol 512kb broadband initially and it never stayed connected, every few minuits it would disconnect me. so i switched over tiscali and havent had any problems what so ever, im even still using the modem aol sent me. lol i was trying to talk to someone who had aol last nite and they kept constantly signing on and off the net AOL even peeves me off now that i havent got it
I'll never touch AOL again. Tried their 60 free day promotion with my old computer; I don't know if they install something that interfers with explorer but I had all sorts of problems even after I uninstalled it. Coincidence, perhaps, but I don't trust it and will never install it on my new computer. I don't understand why people subscribe to it anyway; I have Verizon DSL for the same price as AOL dial-up.
My best friend keeps getting cut out of messenger, AOL and msn. hes on AOL, obviosuly as im posting here, and its really peeving him. I google and googled until i gave up, but this site has the answer to everything! Do you know any more info on why this happens (SypherTek)? He doesnt surf much, he just chats. Maybe when its busy, if your on the same sight for more than 5 minutes or something it cuts you off? Maybe if oyur not using their browser and theres people who will, they just cut u off? Just suggesting, i don't really no much about Assholes on line. Thanks for your help, Joe.
billybob - Tell him to reinstall ACS under 'Add/Remove Programs' in the Control Panel. Also, ask him if he skipped any Updates.
About that, i shall tell him, but if theres only "add/remove" button, how do you reinstall? Just asking.
Ok i shall. Once hes done that, he doesnt have to re register or anything does he, just sign on as normal, you guarantee this lol. Sorry.
Yes. He will have to re type in his location, but you can write whatever you like in there, as it doesn't make any difference ;-) And don't be sorry for asking questions. I like questions! ;-)
Thats, good to know, im full of them. Im good on computers but not brilliant with dvd's etc, its my new area im looking into. Thanks for your help, Billy.
msn messenger keeps signing him out because AOL keeps disconnecting without telling you, try doing that repair on the connectivity service but if it doesnt make any difference i wouldnt be suprised, do what i did, switch ISP
Personally, I would never sign on with any ISP that required I install any kind of software to use their service.
I just got my gold package upgraded to 2Mb. The downloads are [bold]slower[/bold] than when i had my initial silver 512Mb connection! I could dl a film in 4 hours... Now it takes 4 days... It's exactly the same setup, only supposed to be faster! The browsing speed is also the same, nothing changed... I had AOL Silver 512Mb when i was living with my X. It was a bit of a nightmare just like Sypher says. But what i done was to prevent the dialler app from starting... I never had any problems after that! And messenger has never cut me off... The problem i face now is that [bold]every single night[/bold] the connection falls at midnight! I don't know if that's due to my new wireless router/modem, i went through its setup and everything seems to be fine... Another thing is the quality of the line. Before, in my other house, that line could only take up to 512Mb broadband. In here(at me folks) it can support up to 8Mb... I think that could be one of the reasons for connection cuts...
