Are legal backup programs ceditable

I do not have a modded xbox 360 and the problem I am having is that my nephew ruined one of my games by movig the xbox while the game was in it. I was wondering about such programs as copythatgame and others like it for making backups of my games as to prevent losing them all together should something like this happen again. Are those kinds of programs good and legal or are they scams? If they are creditable, which one would you recmmend? Also, will they work just like the originals without having to mod or flash? I have read that it is not illegal to make backups but I just want the opinion from someone who knows about these things. Just need something simple to download into the computer and make backups of my games. Please let me know if this is possible and legal and what would be the preference of programs. Thanks in advance
