Aspect Changes - Please Help

    I am trying to convert AVI to mpeg. The conversion goes ok but the picture either stretches(faces long) or smashes(faces fat) the picture. The avi movies are wide screen. I have tried Cucusoft and TMPGEnc.

    I have noticed that the movies are not all the same. I guess it was how each one was ripped from the DVD to avi. Below are three movies that I want to convert.

    Mind Hunter 592 X 320.
    Serenity 512 X 208.
    The Cave 640 X 272.

    What can I do so the converted Mpeg will be the same aspect the avi?

    In the wizard in TMPGEnc, page 3 - Other Settings>Advanced>Video Arrange Method - select Full Screen (keep aspect ratio). On the first page, I select 16.9 but I have a widescreen TV and have read it doesn't need selecting, usually. I am not familar with Cucosoft

    Some of the avi files will not load in TMPGEnc but will load in Cucusoft. All the avi files play fine on my computer.

    The error I get in TMPGEnc is file not supported or reconized.

    I don't know why Cucosoft would open your file and TMPGEnc won't. Try this: open TMPGEnc, close wizard, main page>options>environmental setting>VFAPI plugin and raise DirectShow Multimedia File Reader to 2 by right clicking it and raising its priority until its 2. It may also be a codec issue and I have yet to see a problem opening any file with the Kazaa lite codec pack. if you use it, make sure any other codecs are uninstalled first. It is available here at AfterDawn: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/k-lite_codec_pack_standard.cfm or at edskes. You can choose what you wish to install during the install. It contains G Spot which will tell you if the proper codecs are installed when you open a file in it. Excellent tool.

    Hi, Jim!

    I had a lot of trouble with aspect ratios with a 640x272 xvid avi file and found that you have to stretch to fit in order to keep aspect ratio... go figure! Anyway, in cucu's advanced settings, select the widescreen 16:9 for your format and then make sure you have the stretch to fit and cucu will make the image the right size for the window. To verify, I ran it against another avi file with a slightly different image size and it worked fine, too.

    You didn't mention what codecs you are using, but I have ffdshow with cucu for xvid avi files and I selected resize & aspect, with resize set to specify aspect ratio of 16:9 and aspect ratio set to keep original aspect ratio. This all worked fine after much trial and error. So, I hope this helps you get the results you are after.
