I am doing a conversion from AVI (xvid) to (VCD) DVD and have some questions about audio conversion. In virtualdubmod (or virtualdub), I convert audio part into wav file. Then, I convert video file to mpeg2 at TMPGEnc plus. In this process, would it be better to process video and audio separately? I found that it would be better if I am using TMPGEnc (plus) because their audio processing is not always optimal. If so, I don't even have to put my wav file (processed at virtualdub) at the time of video conversion at TMPGEnc? Instead, I can put audio and video file separately into a dvd authoring program (like TMPGEnc or DVD-lab)? (But, i couldn't find a way to add video&audio separately in these programs. Or, I can simply put wav file in the audio section at TMPGEnc and process together with video files. To what extent the difference in the quality of audio I can find between these two options? Also, what would be the best audio format to make dvd (wav, ac3, mp2)? how to set bit rate (192kbps or 320, or else) for best result? What would be the best software to process (convert) audio files (Virtualdub, ffmpeggui, else)?
Get ffmpeggui and convert the wav into ac3 or mp2, then author it with your m2v/mpv from tmpgenc in dvdlab.
It seems you have a real good "handle" on what needs to be done. Yes, whenever possible it's better to process the Audio/ Video seperate as long as the possibility of getting them out of sync is Remote. Seems the Video Encoders are strong in THAT department but weak in the Audio. Just a couple things, though. There shouldn't be a problem importing the seperate "demuxed" a/v into the Assets Bin in DVD_LaB_Pro..it works fine for me. (2) If any of this DivX(Avi) encoding involves converting framerate ..i.e. PAL to NTSC and then you are planning on using DVD_LaB(which doesn't have A/V preview with sound. Please don't demux and import them seperate...until you've viewed the .mpeg-2 "muxed" otherwise you won't know you have a sync problem until you've created a "coaster". Dvd_Lab will DEMUX when you import the .mpg. Just something to consider.

I don't know why you want to convert avi file's audio and video separately? I think that may more complicated. And now, there are so many softwares can do the conversion simply, etc winavi.
