Automatic Updates fail. Wont install. Prompt constantly to install again.

I have a problem with Automatic Updates. The updates download but fail to install. Automatic updates constantly ask to install the same updates every day.

One update in particular (kb917953) has already been installed, but I still get asked to install it, every day.

I used the guidelines found on this page to fix the problem but it did not work:

Go to Start, Run, type in services.msc.

Find the Automatic Update service, double click, and then click on the STOP button. (minimize window)

Go to your Windows installation folder, find the Software Distribution folder,...open it, and delete everything in that folder but not that folder itself.

Empty recycle bin.

Maximize the previous services window, and restart the Automatic Updates service.

Try again.

 

Morph - I went through the steps and restarted the machine. The auto update asking to install 917953 is gone. So far, so good.

In the future, can I go to Microsoft Update and get necessary updates, or will the problem start over again?

It didn't work. I started the computer this morning and to my surprise the automatic update was back at it, asking me to install it's favorite update (kb917953). Any other suggestions?

I also have noticed that svchost.exe has been closing about once a day. Could it all be connected?
