For some reason when ever I click on an AVI file, and by click on it I mean once, not to open it just to select it, windows crashes. It would be nice if someone could help me with this. If I need to add more info just ask for it.

Would you say this can happen from the first time you boot up for the day, or is it always after the pc has been on for a while?
When you say select the avi file, do you mean select the file with your player up and running?
Is this a fairly new occurrence?
    What is your O/S?
    What RAM specs?
    Laptop/tower?

Seen this.. it's codec related. Sometimes it's caused by a faulty way crapdoze tries to make a thumbnail... it isn't the computer crashing.. it's explorer (bag'o'crap) exiting with an error.

    try this

    1) Open a command window (Start->Run, type in 'cmd' hit enter)
    2) To remove image preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
    3) To read image preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
    4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
    5) To read media preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 shmedia.dll

    report findings...

Also could be a busted media player... try VLC

It happens to the best of us (heh). I even had an .avi the other day that wouldn't play properly with VLC but did in WMP.. That's worrying.

This happens as soon as i boot up.
Also i mean when i click on it in widows explorer, or try to open it with any program.
It is rather new but about a few months old... I cant be sure when it started... I don't think its a virus, because i have a very good anti virus program and its not catching anything.
I run Windows XP Home edition SP3
    I have 2 gigs RAM
    And a tower

varnull, I tried to do all of those... the only one that helped was #4 but that only made it so I could click on it in explorer, as soon as I try to open it in WMP it crashes WMP....

Probably too many codecs, or something wrong with "spyware" wmp..

Have you thought of trying vlc ?

another suggestion.. because it likely is still explorer crashing while wmp is trying to load

Open windows explorer on a freindly non-crashing folder and go to tools> folder options >view >check Do not cache thumbnails - [Apply to All Folders]

Otherwise it's going to be a session with google... divx5.2.1 is supposed to cure this problem also, but I gave up and did a clean install instead... which fixed it, so it's something busted somewhere (theres a surprise)

also the one video i didn't make i scanned and it said no virus.
When you had me turn off the preview on explorer it stopped explorer from crashing from Data Execution Prevention, but now my player does....

The problem must just be something with AVI files because I just made a new MPEG-4 file and it worked.....

That would be problem solved cuz i could convert all my AVIs to MPEG-4, but..... the converter crashes when I try to open a AVI file....

I had the same problem, and it wasnt anything to do with codec's. if your using XP, the media preview is iffy with AVI and can be turned off. I found this easy fix that solved the problem 100%.

    1) Open a command window (Start->Run, type in 'cmd' hit enter)
    2) To remove image preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 /u shimgvw.dll
    3) To re add image preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
    4) To remove media preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
    5) To re add media preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 shmedia.dll

You will probley just need to do 4, feels good to answer a question instead of asking one, hope it helps.
