I converted an avi file with tempgnc to mpeg and then made a vcd so I can play it on my dvd player, but the thing is, it looks weird. The sound plays fine, but it's kind of choppy, kind of like when you're playing doom and the fps is low. Isn't divx supposed to be better quality than that? or could it be that the avi was a raw format avi and not divx? how can i tell the difference between a raw format avi and a divx avi?

sounds like a problem with TMPGEnc, did you try to uncompress the audio before running it through tmpgenc??
