    Yes And No..
There are no free 'all-in-one' tools allowing you to convert DVD's straight into .mp4's

You can use a ripping tool like dvd decrypter to rip the DVD into a single .vob file & then transcode it using Videora into iPod compatible .mp4.

    http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/guides.html

.AVI is fine, you only need a free converter like Jodix or Videora to transcode that.

There is PQ DVD. You have to pay for it, but it is so worth it. Super fast speed, great resultes. Acually I was in the same situation are you are now. After a grueling few days on these forums and neaver found any critisim about PQ dvd i decided to fork up the cash. (about 35$, is that correct lethal?)

And it gives a 5min trial thing. Just try putting the 5min convertion on your ipod to mkae sure it works. Also the 5min is good for short things (music videos, funny plays, ect....) 5min is normaly enouh for these.

Yes, it's $35, but with all these programs, you should always try before you buy.

Does the video play in iTunes? If so then I suspect you have a 60GB iPod and firmware version 1.1 If you downgrade your firmware to version 1.0 all your video playing troubles should be gone.

If the file plays without video in iTunes then it didn't convert properly. Check to make sure the file your converting from has video, and just try converting the file again.
