i have an old avi file from one of my older computers that eventually crashed.. i had backed up the avi movie file of my daughters first ballet class to another hard drive.. i have placed the hard drive into a new computer running vista... the file properties shows the file is avi but when i use vlc or windows media player to play, all i get is audio.. how can i tell what codec i might have used on this older file.. i might need to dl codecs...
can someone please help as this is the only file i have.. the original tape was lost..

OK, ill try to help you, ummmm, the main codecs that the avi container could possible support are, msmpeg4, wmv, wmv2, mpeg4, h.264, h.263, ogg, matroska.
Try all of these codecs, then report back here, really, if vlc media player cant play the file, then most likely, it will be unplayable, possibly because it could be truncated?
