Can I just put a .avi file on a DVD-R and have it play in my stand alone DVD player without converting/encoding it? If so, what program can I use? TIA

You can if your standalone player supports playback of these files (and divx etc). If it doesn't then you will have to convert to DVD and burn the files to disk. (I use VSO Divxto DVD for this, however it is only one method of many to do it). Another option is if you have a TV out on your graphics card then you can play the file on the PC but watch it on your TV.
