I was wondering if anyone could help?

My friend gave me a TV show in avi format and asked me if I could put it on DVD. I imported the avi into Adobe Premiere and burnt it to DVD with no problems, however, the sound is way out of sync.

Is this a common problem and is there a way around this issue?

    Many thanks
    Ste

Yeah this happens. Demux the audio and video, convert audio with something like headac3he so that it's inline with dvd spec, then use the newly created audio track as the audio when you encode. That should take care of it, but sometimes certain AVIs can be a pain in the ass.
