hi, im new to creating dvds but i know how to handle most media formats and im having some problems creating a DVD image from an AVI file. basically i have downloaded DivxToDVD and TMPGEnc and im having trouble with both. what i read was that i could fit two 700mb avi files on one disk, well im struggling with one 800mb avi. i use TMPGEnc first and found that my film was using 102% of the disk(4.7 dvd-rw) when it is around 130 mins long so i had to cancel that and try DivxToDVD. i found it really straight forward but when i tried to convert it i am getting estimated times of 5 hours?!?!!? why would it take so long?? help me out please!
after looking at the problem a bit more i have found that TMPGEnc purposly makes the file as good quality as possible to maximise disk space useage. then after looking at divxtodvd alot more i think that it just takes a long time to encode and i have to put up with it unfourtunatly, however it allowes me to keep the file size small because it doesnt try to improve it at all. am i right in this?
Im having the exact same problem as you. Im just new to this DVD burning but after dealing with TMPGEnc and the size problem I tried a program called Cucusoft Pro. This did the exact same thing with the file size. Finally someone suggested this DivxToDVD program. Yes, fine it worked BUT it wont play on my JVC DVD player or my brothers Sony DVD player. Actually I have now tried it on 5 different DVD players (between mine, friends, and family) and so far the movie has ONLY played on my parents cheap player. Anyone out there know of any other AVI to DVD programs OTHER than the three mentioned above.
This is not a problem, It is because you have the Bitrate set too High in Tmpgenc...On the Same Screen in the "Wizard" in tmpgenc were it tells you how much space it will take up on a DVD is the Same Page were you can simply Lower the Bitrate just a little Bit so it will fit on a DVD..... You can also Fit Two 120 minute AVI Files on a DVD without a problem, On that same Page of the wizard in Tmpgenc you just set the "Video resolution" to "352x480" and the Lower the "Bitrate" down till it uses up 50% of a DVD and encode both Files and author both to DVD useing your DVD authoring Program.... Make sure in Step "1" you select "Mpeg-1 layer-2(MP2)" as the audio format because the Default "Linear PCM Audio" takes up far too much space on the DVD... Also when useing the "352x480" resolution the Video Might look Strange when played back on your PC but it will look Totally Normal when played on your TV set or when useing a proper Software DVD Player.... When useing this Resolution you can Fit about 4 Hours of Video on a DVD at 2250kbs for Video and 192kbs for audio at about SVCD quality.... You can Fit even more or up to 6 hours on a DVD if you Lower the Resolution again down to 352x240 and lower the Bitrate to about 1475kbs for Video and 192kbs for audio with better than VCD quality but you have to unlock the settings in Tmpgenc and close the Wizard to change the setting to these settings..... well basically im looking to fit one film on a dvd, that is about 2 horus mabey 2:30 long. what would be the best resolution?
If you are Trying to Put a 2 hour movie on to DVD then you should use the Standard DVD Resolution of 720x480 for NTSC or 720x576 for Pal and then set the Video Bitrate to 4875kbs and the Audio to 192kbs and the resulting Mpeg-2 file should fit on a DVD without any problems.... If the Movie is 2.5 hours Long that would be the Longest movie you should put on a DVD at 720x480/576 Pal resolution as the Video Bitrate for 2.5 hours on a DVD would be 3850kbs for video and 192kbs for audio and any Lower than that would Start to produce Bad results at this resolution.....
