Is it possible to convert avi to mpeg2 and keep the quality? I have tried several programs and the encoders do a poor job with rendering. I have a stand alone dvdr and I can connect my camera back to the recorder and get great quality. I would like to do all of the work on the computer rather than trasfering back to the camera and then connecting it to the recorder. Can I do this and can someone help?
What program(s) are you working with? You need to familiarize yourself with one or two programs and learn their features to tweak the settings. I use TMPGEnc Plus encoding at 8000-9000CBR and the naked eye of any normal person will not be able to tell a difference. Also, are you viewing the result only on your PC or are you putting it to DVD and testing on a TV? Video will always look different on a TV than a monitor. Usually it looks normal on a TV when you may notice glitches on a monitor. I don't know if you've visited www.videohelp.com yet, but I've found this to be a great resource. Do some searches there on whatever apps you are using. There are tons of user made guides there that can help also. You also need to make sure that you're using the correct bitrate for your project. Here's a really good bitrate calculator I've found: http://dvd-hq.info/Calculator.html
