    @nicismail

    I doubt you will get very many responses with such a vague question.
    What kind of files, what software do you have, what exactly do you intend to do?

    haha, wow. be more specific!

    for example:

    *what operating system are you using?
    *what kind of files do you want to back up?
    *do you have nero? (can be used to back up files pretty easily)

    LOL, Windows XP, want to back up all important files including outlook express because the main problem is...My computer no longer recognizes the CD drive or even the DVD drive. It says it has sucessfully loaded the device driver but cannot find the hardware device (Code 41) I have tried the trouble shooter, updating the driver, checked the connections, bought a new DVD drive, But still the same message. So I thought backing up all files would help.
    Thanks for your continued help

    sounds like it's time to reformat your computer and reinstall your OS. As the computer isn't recognizing your drives, i'd buy another harddrive, hook it up as a slave, then copy all important files to it. once you reload your OS, you can either copy the files back or leave them on the new drive, or keep the new drive in there for backup purposes (recommended!).

    yep, I completely agree. do some shopping online for a new hard drive, you can find some decent 100-300 GB ones for around $100

    LOL!
    I bought a new drive a couple of weeks ago at Office Max, 160GB for about $60(90- $30 rebate).
    make sure you partition the new one so you don't lose all your files if you ever have to reinstall your OS.
