Hi, I'm fixing a friends computer, his mobo fried, and I thought the processor was still usable as I had done this before because the same thing happened to me. It's an athlon x2. So I ordered the part and I installed it in a asus m3n78-vm. So when I finally flip it on, the lights/fans come on then the hdd and power lights turn off, the screen is blank and I get no beeps. I leave it on for five minutes. The heatsink is cold. Is it a bad processor? Or something else?

did you connect to 2nd connector from psu to motherboard? try clearing the cmos as have found that to work sometimes to kick start a stubborn system.

take everything off except the processor and psu .. then fire it up. should beep like mad.. if not try a different psu and check the mobo isn't grounded to the case.. sometimes they object to having no washers under the screws.

This kind of thing is often the seating of the grafix card .. I have learned that from bitter experience with many systems which work fine on the bench then refuse to post when delivered to the customer.

I got the computer to start. It was the 2nd connector. (I feel like such a noob, I went to school for this.) So I got it up, I get a splash screen and post. It just won't recognize my ide optical drive or ide hard drive. EDIT: Got them to recognize, installing windows right now! Thanks guys I'd be up shit creek without your help. I hope one day down the line I can help get you guys out of a jam.
