Before I buy a chip

I have an xbox hdd that has no dash board and doesn't load games, I now need a chip to install the second hdd I brought off of ebay. My question is before I buy the chip will I need a working hdd to install the new one? And Will I have to get the new one unlocked he has offerd to unlock it for me? Should I go along with him and unlock it because I havn't got a clue what to do

I have a guy that can install the chip for free! I need to decide which chip, It has to have hdd swapping enabled!
