I brought the Belkin F5D3670 router about 9 months ago now, and its the biggest peice of crap ever. I wasnt playing online game nor was i using Torrent back then so for about 5 months everything was fine with it the odd cut out now and then but nothing to scream about. But now that i have started to use Torrents and playing online games such as World of Warcraft the true crapness of the router come to the front. It resets itself every 10 minutes or so, which means i got kicked off world of warcraft or my Torrents have to start again. I looked at a few forums to try and find the problem and it seems that this is a problem with all Belkin F5D3670 routers, some people have found that its because it over heats, so i ripped the top off it, that didnt work, and some people have found its because there is too much Malware and Spyware running through it which = to much traffic which makes the router reset. That for me just means bad design by belkin because it over heats, and not enough testing on it. So now im looking for a new router, so if anyone has a suggestion of a good one throw it this way
netgear, D-Link and linksys are good names a router made by any of these will be better that crappy belkin... everybody i know who owns something by belkin has had no end of problems with it - usually the problems go unresolved.
Yeah, the customer service people are really nice a Belkin, BUT they never resolve the problem, i have phoned up about 20 times to get help and i always get told to do the same thing i.e. Change the MTU blah blah, and when i phone again and tell them it didnt change anything they tell me its my ISP's fault and i should phone them, i phone my ISP and theres no problem their end. So i phone Belkin back, and i get "Oh yeah, ok take the power cable out and put it back in again" i do it ofc its dont do shit, so i tell him that RESPONSE "You go a virus mate, cant help you, Bye!" Luckily Belkin Customer service in the UK is free phone.
its almost like they make the thing specifically so that they wont work. the amount of messing around it takes just get the things to actually function on a wireless network is rediculous
i bought a Belkin wireless router (for Cable) the other week, and one problem aside (cable modem kept going on standby), it's great. however i'll agree it does get very hot indeed (but then so does the actual cable modem). i'll probably rig up a fan to cool them, or relocate them before the summer. ps i wasn't deliberately gonna buy a Belkin (actually normally i'm only a fan of their older KVM switches ie the ones that actually work with Linux) but the Belkin was all of £35 and i was able to get a Belkin usb wireless dongle thing for other pc for £20, so as long as it keeps behaving i'll be happy. what i will say is my previous ADSL router, a D-Link, was fantastic aside from needing a reset every single week or so
I think ill get a linksys one, i seen one on a site that got £30 reduction from from £80 to £50 so not too bad. )
now you mention it there was a 13-router review in Aug 2005's Personal Computer World, the winner being the Linksys WAG54G. (dagnammit, just noticed how old the magazine is, i only bought it last week, bloody shopkeepers, Aug 2005 indeed!)
There are only 2 labels that i'd buy for my network: d-link and 3com. Also never heard of serious probs with linksys but i've used them by myself (saw them in networks of customers of mine). btw 3com is expensive but i have a 8-port gigabit switch and that one rocks! even on 100mb-lan. The difference with low-budget brands is that manufacturers like d-link and 3com (maybe linksys too) are wellknown for their pro-stuff... Never buy low-profile stuff for network-equipment, often just a waste of money
/signed Belking routers are ok if you only use the net for checking e-mails and general net surfing, but as soon as you start to do P2P d/ling then you get problems
I wouldn't use D-Link, I think they're pretty crappy in my opinion. Linksys is by far the king for routers and hubs.

i've got the D-Link 504T (non wireless) that i used for probably a year or more. was excellent apart from needing a reset every week (i put that down to the embedded Linux kernel but whatever the problem is, a reset roughly once a week has proven to keep it stable (it would lock up after about a week or so))
