    I'm looking for a new DVD burner, since I blown out my old Lite-on. I would like to know what you would suggest to buy. I need something that is capable with most software out there. Something speed, reliable, dual-layer!

    I blown out my old lite-on, and replaced it with a BenQ DW1650.

    The Benq 1650 as stated above you can't beat them for the money and the quality is really there.

    Benq 1650!

    Well under $40 including shipping at newegg.com!

    Give them quality verbatim and ty media,and 8x and 12x burning should be no problem.They really love the plus format,and booktype them to dvd-rom for a very high stand alone player compatability rate. Their dash backups don't fare as well.

    The DW1655 is available now. Should I get this one or is 1650 still the one to get? 1655 has Lightscribe.

    Either one it's a personal preference.You won't go wrong. The more these burn the better they get.As saugmon stated they love the Ty and Verbs.Chris

    All 4 of my Q's love anything you throw at them: Taiyo Yuden/Maxell Hitachi/Verbatim/Ritek/Sony/and Ricohjpn.

    They have no trouble burning the lower quality manufacturers like: MBI/UME/AML/and CMC-but stand some of my stand alone players have trouble playing them!

    Is there a disadvantage to going with 1655 over 1650? What about 1670?

    1655 $40USD (today sale price) @ Newegg:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101006

    1650 $35USD @ Newegg
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101010

    I also read this about the 1670. Is this a good summary?

    "The DW1670 uses the same chipset (Panasonic MN103SA6GSJ) as the Benq DQ60 and the LG 4166 to name a few. The DQ60 got a bad early rap but has steadily improved as firmware revisions have come out. The LG 4166 has shown some impressive results. The biggest knock on the DW1670 by most Benq purists is the chipset is not a true Philips Nexperia - which means no quality scanning and limited QSuite support (primarily no Solidburn support). If that is no issue then I think you will be quite happy with this purchase."

    BenQ DW 1650 from newegg.com with latest firmware. Got mine 2mo ago. None better.

    I have the LG external 2166 cousin of the 4166. It's a great drive too, but it does NOT support nero quality scans!

    Why 1650 over 1655? That's what I was wanting to know.

    @nemain

    I chose the 1650 over 1655 because I already had a lightscribe drive(LG). I saw no reason to get another. The lightscribes are not to my liking. They are hard to read and light even on 30 minutes burns.

    Try this free program to help enhance your lightscribe covers. It made mine turn out a lot better. I was scribing twice on each disc,so there's an hour.I've use 2 different printing programs,and same blurry results.

    The enhancement feature/update of Lightscribe ELCU will take the time up to around 40 mins,but a sharper/clearer image.

    The overall quality still lags behind my shiny inkjet printables.

    What lightscribe model do you have?

    I've got the external 16X LG 2166D, new this xmas. The gold verbs really don't look good at all. Using the nero lightscribe software. There in may lie the problem.

    I've used both nero's disc labeler and surething easylabeler cd4 and both the same print quality. I also have sonic express labeler which has a glitch in it,but works for my dad's HP 640c ls burner.

    I was a little skeptical when mort81 posted that link to that lightscribe ELCU utility. Pretty simple,and keeps it set that way permanent-or you can delete it.

    @saugmon

    Thanks for the link. I tried it with one of my daughter's DVDs, Bound. I did a lightscribe for her with the enhancement. Unfortunately the label with all printing but it was definitely darker with better contrast, but since it was not a pix I couldn't tell if it would have been better. I'm with you I think the inkjet printable is the way to go. I don't have an epson printer and my Sharpie is good enough since the discs are in a notebook and a printed insert of the DVD front is in each disc slot. I have way too many TY TO2s to use up.

    I use normal-original-covers on my lightscribes. I dowload several choices,and figure out how I want to print them:

    Dark covers:Definitely full hub white inkjet printable.

    Lighter:lots of bright colors: Reg hub/shiny inkjet printable.I wish I could find quality full hub shiny printables.

    Dark pics on light backgrounds or covers with gold/bronze in them like Saw II: Then I'll use the lightscribe.Again,full hubs would be sweeter.

    Epson printers:

    Keep an eye out if you have a staple's and your printer goes on the fritz. They'll have a clearance on them every now and then. I picked my dad up an R-200 for $50 when they cleared them out for the R-220. They had the R-320 on clearance a while back for $99,making way for the R-340.There's other newer models coming out.

    The price I pay for ink cartridges is the closer.$12 to $20 bucks for a set of 6 ink cartridges. These sets are $60 in most stores.My printer does same me a bundle when it comes to replacing cartridges.

    But remember I have a new Canon pixma that uses $1.59 carts from abacus ink. I was going to get the Epson R220 from Sams for $80. But Ink is a lot more than $1.59 and like I said I have oodles of Sony TY T02s that aren't printable.
