I have a batch of VHS tapes that need conversion to DVD format. If you have, say $1000- $1,500 to spend, what kind of a system would you put together to accomplish this? The canopus a/D converter sounds good, and I'm assuming I'd use a Windows XP based system w/ say a gig of memory and at least a 120 gig HD for storeage. What about video cards? anything special to look for? CPU speed? TIA for any comments. __Ron
Well if you have a couple Grand to spend on the Best quality Analogie Digital converter then the ADVC-1000 would be the best Bet but is costs over $2000: http://www.canopus.us/us/products/advc1000/pt_advc1000.asp It has a bunch of Built in Features Like Noise Filtering and a Time Based Corrector and Deinterlaceing algorythyms that could give you results as good or better than the Source VHS tape because of it"s advanced Filtering, a cheaper solution But still just as good would be the ADVC-500 or the ADVC-300 which Both have the Advanced Filtering options that the Plain ADVC-100 doesn"t have, If you Planned on getting an ADVC-100 but wanted something that isn"t an external Box then the Canopus ACEDVio would be a Good choice because it has the Same Features as the ADVC-100 but is an Internal PCI Card and can be found for about $100 Cheaper, I have seen them for as Low as $169 US....As for a Good Video Capture PC system it is Good to start with a Good Foundation Like a Good High end Motherboard Like one that Supports the newest Technoligy so you won"t be left behind when new things come out..I just Picked up a Killer High end P-4 Motherboard that has a Top FSB speed up to 1266mhz and supports the newest Northwood and Prescot CPU"s and has both ATA and SATA Support and has Dual Chanell DDR support up to 6gb, It is called the "Albatron 865PE Pro" which regualarily sell for as much as $175 but I paid $75.50 For mine Pluss shipping which is an awesome Price for one of the Top Motherboards on the Market.. A good Fast 3.0ghz 800mhz FSB CPU would be a Good Choice as with these CPU"s and a Good Motherboard with a good Cooler you can easilly clock these CPU"s at up to 3.6ghz without any problems..Getting a Fast Harddrive is a Must like maybe a 120 to 200gb SATA Drive you be a Good drive for Video Capture and maybe another Smaller drive for your OS and Programs...For a Video card you can get away with any Number of Video cards as it isn"t that Important of a Issue for Video editing But at Least a 64mb Card would be good But say a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb or 256mb would be Ideal..Also at least 512mb of ram useing Dual Chanell DDR would be good... If you were to build the System yourself you could get a Smokin Fast System Like this for about $1500 with the ADVC-100 or maybe the ACEDVio if you wanted an Internal Solution...These Devices also have a TV out Connector so you can see that the Video will look like on TV before you edit it and Author it to DVD...Well Good Luck and if you Look arround good and Hard you can usually find really good deals on High end Computer Parts....Cheers
Thanks very much for the advice. I hadn't heard about the Canopus ACEDVio before. So it fits on a PCI slot instead of being external? That souds like a good option. Sorry to say, I haven't a spare $2000 to drop, just on a A/D converter unit - though I may buy a lottery ticket next weeked and luck out -- will keep you posted. Thanlks also for the thoughts re. the video cards -- it seems it's a real jungle out there and it's a little hard to sort through which are usefull and which are just added $$ without much video editing bang. I'm not interested in gaming, just remastering some valuable (to me) VHS tapes. Another project down the pipe is converting about 5,000 feet of 16mm film (silent) to DVDs. Of course, one cna have this done, but it's very expensive. A friend offere to loan me a digital VCR and suggested projecting them and taping from the screen. Well the Motherboard you Just Posted is very simular to the Motherboard I just Bought yesterday ,It has the same Intel 865PE chipset accept mine was made by a specialty motherboard Manufacturer called "Albatron" and I only Paid $75 for mine it Has Raid and 4 Dual Chanell DDR Ports, it was also voted one of the top motherboards of 2003.... So if you shopped arround a bit you could get a simular System for maybe a bit cheaper but that still is a pretty good Price for a Very High end PC.....
How about for someone with a little LESS than $2K? ;-) With my current computer (ATI card, old GA-7DX mobo, HPDVD200i) and a decent Hitachi 4-head (FX-695), can I get away with a SIMA CT-1, or should I move one of my JVC SVHS VCRs into the computer room and upgrade the mobo to a GA-7VT600-L? Would it help to swap the PX-708a into the same computer as the ATI? I was dropping ~5% of the frames using MyDVD and a T-bird 850MHz but after swapping in the Athlon XP 2400+, I'm dropping ~12%. :-( I'm also reading about DisableATIMacrovisionDetection.zip, ATIMacro100.zip, ATIMacro30Sec.zip, and RemoteSelector2.1.3. hey RonR about the graphics card question i think that you should go with the radeon 9000 all in wonder pro. it has all the features you would need and is cheaper then the others mentioned because it is less for gaming since it is older. you said gaming was not an issue though so i think this would be best for you and would save money.
