I am looking for the best DVD burner for quality, durability, usability, and functionability. Price is not an issue at all. I know the benq 1640 is a solid burner. I also have read on various sony burners, nec, plextor, and pioneer. I just want to know which one is the best. THE VERY BEST. Thank you very much for yalls advice. I AM A COMPLETE NOOB by the way.

I have six different burners that I have purchased over the last two years and I like the BenQ DW-1640 the most. I went to several different sites to read tests on DVD DL burners and the BenQ was the Editor's choice on most of them ...

Here are some reviews for you ... enjoy

I've also used 6 different pc drives:

    Khypermedia +8x- 100 burns-using it as a dvd-rom drive
    I/O Magic 16x- 25 burns-Sitting idle/total junk!
    HP 640c Lightscribe-15 burns-sitting idle!Way too many crc errors.
Benq 1620-1700 burns and counting. This sucker will not die!
Benq 1620-400 burns and counting-0 coasters
    Benq 1640-50 burns and counting

For a solid burner, definitely the benq 1640! Those other drives were ok with playing their own backups, but stand alone players definitely had more trouble playing them. That HP and I/O magic totally sucked a**.
All 3 benqs: Those booktype backups play everywhere/99+% success rate/95% stand alone compatability rate. That's why I'm sold on BenQ. These are quality drives and an excellent price of $40-$44 including shipping. There's nothing cheap about them.If you get one of these,be sure to stick with the plus format and booktype them to dvd-rom. If you plan on playing your backups in quite a few different drives because they are a heck of a lot more compatable than their dash backups on stand alones. This drive is also used by plextor and philips in some of their models.

Those features you are looking for,is also what I look for.I stick with what I have success with.

    Good Luck!

I was reading a review and some people were saying that the benq 1640 is loud. If yall could write back with some feedback I would appreciate it. Does anyone have any comment on the sony 810, nec 3550, or the pioneer, 100d. Do they compare with the benq

    I have a LiteOn, a NRC, a Pioneer, a Plextor, a Samsung and the BenQ DW-1640 ...
    In a word NO!

The Sony is a LiteOn and the Pioneer doesn't booktype DVD+R/RW and scans poorly ...

What do yall mean by booktype? I have a TDK burner that I bought 2 years ago. It only burns at 4x, but I understand that you need to burn at slow speeds anyway. I use Ridata and Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media. I figure this thing would wear out at any time so I was looking at the reviews to see what would be another great investment.

Anyway, was wondering what you where meaning by booktype:

I also forgot to mention that my current burner is external. Is the benq available as an external drive. Where is a good place to buy from?

    Thanks

Neckbone7: Booktyping: Some dvd-rw drives have the capability to booktype the plus format and turn them into the dvd-rom format. It's called bitsetting. For the burners with that capability,it gives you 3 different formats to burn. This booktyping comes in handy when you run across a stand alone player or pc drive that doesn't recognize your plus and dash backups.By booktying,it fools those playing into being able to read them. For all 3 of my benqs, those booktyped backups way outperform the dash backups on the stand alones/ps2s/and pc dvd drives. I have another burner, I/O magic 16x that also had this ability. It totally sucked a**! The dash backups from that I/O outperformed the booktyped backups. That is where the quality of a burner will show up.

Benq makes an external drive, the 1621. I'm not a big fan of those external burners.

The way I would do it if I had to go external:
Get a quality booktyping capable internal 16x dvd-rw drive like benq/plextor/lg/or lite-on for about $40. Then get an external enclosure to place that drive in.This will run about $20-$30 ? Newegg.com is a great site for the best prices of these drives,as well as the external enclosure.

My Xbox and dvd player seem to play my dvd-r media fine. With this being said, booktyping really shouldn't be a big deal to me, right? Also, thanks for telling me about getting an internal drive and buying an external case. I didn't know you could do that.

I thought you needed an IDE connection to get X16 speeds. How would you do that with an external setup?

I'm also looking towards getting a new drive. I'm going to get an internal one to replace the HP or whatever came with my refurb media center. Complete junk. Looking into Pioneers and BenQ.
