What is the best quality format (AVI, MPEG2, MPEG3, etc.) and software to capture video from a DV camcorder?

I have captured some video from my camcorder using Nero Express Vision using the MPEG2 format but the quality doesn't appear very good on the computer (let alone what it'll look like on a TV screen with a DVD player). When I captured video using VirualDub, it saved a huge AVI file (4,000,000 KB (AVI) vs. 500,000 KB (MPEG). Is a video captured into a avi format better quality?

I dont know about you, but i tried capturing video last night on my DVDCAM and it just choked after 5 minutes. It started slowing down and hicupping. Im using a S-Video to an ATI Tuner/Capture card.

My camcorder is connected to a USB port. Why not try USB?
