I currently have a Plextor 716A in my current system that burns 2.4x verbatim +R DLs great that play in my set top dvd player fine.

However, I am building a new AM2 athlon system and bought a plextor 755SA. The 755SA cannot and will not burn ANY DL disks at all in the new system. I tried the new firmware, but no go. New drivers, everything, 6 $3 coasters later, it don't work! I even swapped it out in my current system in place of my 716A, but no go.

I am going to return it, however, who makes a DVD DL burner that burns DL the best? I don't care about speed, all I want is a reliable burn that will play in my settop DVD player.

All I burn is +R DL.

My BenQ 1640 burns those verbs @various speeds. I've burnt 8 of them and had no problems.

What brand media are you using and what programs are you using for the backup and burn?

I've always used verbaitum 2.4x +Rs. I use DVD decypter to rip to my HD, then burn it with the latest version of clone dvd2.

No. Because I figured that if my 716a has no problems at all using that meida and that software combo, why should the 755SA be an exception.

Also, I've already lost $15 worth of DLs trying to get the 755SA to work. I really don't want to lose any more DLs to that drive.

I've asked at some other forums for DVD burners and most people reccommend the Pioneer DVR-111d. They claimed that it has the best settop dvd player compatibilty.

In your opinion, is that a good drive?

All I want is a drive that can write Verbatium 2.4X +Rs that will play in my DVD player.

I'd buy another 716A, but newegg.com no longer has them.

Pioneer have a reputation of being an excellent drives, but so are the BenQ's and usually cost less. I've got a BenQ 1640 and been thinking about getting a 1650 too.

Newegg.com is out of stock on the 1650 benqs right now. That's why I was thinking about the pioneer instead.

Also, the $$$ difference between the benq and the pioneer is only $2 @ newegg.com

I have an NEC ND-3550A that is fantastic at DL burns with Verbatim and Ritek media. Tigerdirect has them for $20 after rebate.

Well, I just did a Bizrate.com search and found out Meritline has the 1655. Also Mwave.com has both 1650/1655 at a killer price. I've shopped from Mwave before and had no problems.

The least expensive media I would buy to back up PS2 games would be Verbatim. While other brands might produce decent results, Verbatim, along with Taiyo Yuden, are the only two brands that are producing the kind of overall consistency and reliability that I demand.

I'm not familiar with the Pioneer burners, personally, but I have used Pioneer DVD ROM drives before, and have been happy with them. My Benq 1655 is my primary burning drive right now, but my LiteOn 1693S also produces very good results, still. I'd recommend both of those brands, as would many others on this site. I'm sure if you wait a bit, someone with real life experience with Pioneer burners could tell you what they think, but my gut tells me that your drive is probably a good one, and will more than likely treat higher end media as you'd expect and product excellent results.

The 111 is considered one of the best burners EXCEPT that it does not bitset/booktype DVD+R, which can cause compatibility problems. It's mind-boggling that manufacturers leave out something so important yet so simple these days. You may be able to get a hacked firmware at rpc1.org. You may or may not lose DVD-RAM capability, but the 111D isn't supposed to support DVD-RAM anyway (though a firmware update can change that - trouble is, I don't know if there's a FW update that both supports DVD-RAM and bitsetting, so you'll have to pick one.)

Ah, that's an important point, and would exclude that particular drive as one I'd recommend, as I only use DVD+Rs, which is only a "smart move" if you are able to bitset the discs to DVD-ROM for high compatibility.

The inability to bitset right out of the box has always been my only drawback with piooneer drives and is why I don't recommend them. Major feature flaw. I don't know for certain but the 109, 110, and 111 may booktype dvd+r DL media to dvd-rom (like some NEC's) but will not booktype SL dvd+r media to dvd-rom without a flash with hacked f/w.

I would recommend benq 1650 or 1655 (stay away from the 1670) or lite-on drives. As for plextor drives, stay away from the 740, 750, and 755. They are rebadges and not true plextors. You should be ok with the 712 (though getting kind of old and may not have good f/w support), 716, and 760.
