Hey Everyone, im just starting to covert videos for my ipod with videora. so far every video has worked great. my question is what is the best resoulustion/audio video setting to use when converting. i dont mind it taking up space, but obviously i dont want a huge file if its not any different on the ipod than a smaller one. ive been using this for settings: 640x360, 768 bitrate and 29.97 framerate with 128 audio bitrate and 48Khz sample rate. thank you in advance for any help burner413
I always use 24fps when using any converter. As for the other settings, here are the limits for the iPod (all in Lethal_B's DVD to iPod Guide): [bold]H.264 video:[/bold] up to 768 Kbps, 320x240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats. [bold]MPEG-4 video:[/bold] up to 2.5 mbps, 480x480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
y do u use 24 over 29.97 for the framerate? any reason? also, is it save to assume that the closer you get to the limit ie: 480x480 the better quality the video will be, but going over, like 640x360 will not make the video better, just a larger file, because of the limits? also i have run into my first actual problem. i am trying to convert a .mpg video, but when i click start, the screen flashes and it says done but the file isnt created. any suggestions? thanks again for the help burner413
Well, the video is very sharp at around 1500kbps - anything over that takes a lot of space and the video quality improvement is minimal. Anything between 700 & 1500kbps is more than enough to give a good to excellent output on your iPod's small screen. Your other settings are just fine. Though please bear in mind that the iPod's resolution is 320x240px, so it is rather futile going any higher than that res wise as it will use up unnecessary space. If you are partial to the widescreen effect, then you may want to try transcoding at, say, 320x176..
thank you very much. i have one quick question though, u said that the said that the ipod displayed at 320x240. but the limitations say 480x480. what would the difference be in the video from one size to the other. also does anyone have any idea why it wont convert one of my mpg files?
I am not too sure buddy.. is this just one of many mpg files you have tried to transcode, or just the one? If you have already converted many mpg's, and this is the only one that raises an issue, then it may just be a fault within the video..
no this isnt the first one ive done many but this is the first that has caused a problem i have no idea why its doing this...
It may just be an error with the video; However, there have been quite a few instances recently regarding iPod Video transcoding programs & mpg files. To put your mind at rest, I suggest you try converting the video using a different application, such as Jodix. http://www.ipod-video-converter.org/ Then, if you sucessfully manage to transcode the "problem" video file, then we can assume that maybe the problem lies with Videora & certain mpg files. Adversely, if it still doesn't convert, then it is likely it is just an issue with that individual file rather than the program you are using..
480x480 is the max that the video chip in the iPod can handle [I believe] pushing that limit is good if you plan on using the video out option of your iPod. Otherwise it wastes space, and probably battery as well considering more information needs to be read off of the hard drive. 24 is often used as the framerate because sometimes when 29.97 is used the audio and video can get out of sync. It also makes the video size smaller and the difference is indistinguishable.
