Basically, I'm trying to extract a 2 minute segment, but the topics I found on this board talk about extracting whole movies and making 700 mb files or something. Is there a quick and easy way of just making a small AVI of a just a little part of the dvd without having to extract vob files and such?

To extract a video segment from a DVD disk or folder and save as AVI with freeware tools.
    Download DVD Shrink:
    http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/dvdshrink32setup.zip
    And the Guide:
    http://www.mrbass.org/dvdshrink/

    Download VirtualDub-Mpeg2:
    http://fcchandler.home.comcast.net/stable/VirtualDub-MPEG2.zip

Run Shrink and either 'Open disc' or 'Open Files'
Click 'Re author' -> drag Title 1 from right to left pane.
Click on the 'Start/End frame' symbol, choose your video clip and 'OK'.
Click on 'Backup!' and save to 'Hard Disc folder' -> exit Shrink.

    Run Vdub (Virtualdub.exe)
Click 'File' -> 'Open Video File' and go to the folder that you saved with Shrink.
There are 'Audio' and a 'Video sub-folders inside:eek:pen the 'Video' folder and select the vob.

Click the button marked 'Video' -> 'Full Processing mode' then 'Compression' and choose 'Divx...Fast motion'
Click 'Audio' -> 'Full processing Mode'
Click 'File' -> 'Preview output from start'
    then 'Save as AVI'.

Note if the DVD is protected, then it would have to be ripped to the hard drive using either DVD Decrypter or DVD Fab Decrypter (both free).

    Hey, that worked. Thanks.

I found that you could also do it quickly with isofter dvd ripper, but for some reason the files that I got with that program had just the sound and no picture.

    Attar,

When I tried open the vob file with Virtual dub 1.6.17 that i successfully saved to the hard drive, it give me an message saying:
MPEG IMPORT FILTER: INVALID PACK AT POSITION 3: MARKER BIT NOT SET; POSSIBLY MPEG-2 STREAM.

    Any idea about that?

Thanks for the info thus far however.
