    Hi all

(please shout if there is a better forum for this)

I have the dvd box set of green wing (the series doesn't matter of course, it could be 24, Lost, whatever)

These types of dvd with 3/4 episodes per disc are usually jam packed onto a DVD9 (unlike most movies which don't fill an entire disc) so to simply shrink and copy them gives you a bad quality copy using 50% to 60% compression to squeeze it onto a DVD5.

What I want to do is remake the DVD, taking out the extras but keeping some form of menu to select the episode, so this rules out shrink as when you start taking things out you lose the menus.

My first idea was to ripp each episode seperatly (at a better compression rate to fit 2 episodes per dvd) and then use NeroVision Express to make up the DVD and create a menu and title screen etc.

The problem I have is that I used shrink to ripp the episodes so they are now on my hard drive in video folders containing VOB, IFO, BUP files etc, and when it comes to importing a video file into NeroVision it becomes clear that shrink has split each episode.
If I try to add both halfs it treats it as 2 seperate video files so there are 2 icons on the menu screen.

It might be easier to have each episode as an AVI file first but I can't seem to find a program to do it. There are programs to ripp from disc to AVI but I already have the video on my hard drive and cant find anything to convert the existing dvd files to AVI, if you know of anything to do this please let me know! : )

Orrrrrrr, is there a way to make shrink not split the episodes into different files???

There msut be somebody out there who has re made a dvd of lost, 24 etc, please let me know your secrets! cheers : )

DVDRemake and DVDRebuilder. Honestly, DVDRebuilder is so good that you can minimize what you remove!!!

    hi again

i've started with remake, tried to 'import dvd', selected my ripped iso of the disc and it's saying "there were problems with the operation, please examine log"

does it work with iso's, or should i shrink it into dvd folders first?

If you still need help at this point, post again and I can give some more detailed on my method. What I find fool-proof is a combo of DVD Decrypter and Nero Recode. I always back up a lot of my tv dvds so I can tell you that it works really well. It may have another step or two but the results are flawless. With Recode you can also do parts of a show via
"remake a dvd" and I've even figured out how to include title and menu pictures for each episode. The menu pictures are inactive (no clicking for chapter scene) but i find it better then just having one giant movie episode.

    Good luck

    Hi

Thanks for the reply. I have got rid of nero vision express 2 and got version 3 instead, and now all is fine.
I also stumbled across the option in shrink to NOT split the video files so importing them into NVE3 is now simple, even though I afterwards found the option in nero to string split video files together so it wouldn't have mattered.

I used shrink to open the full dvd iso i had previously ripped, re-author one episode at a time with about 65% compression and then did the rest in NVE3 and with 3 episodes per disc the picture is fairly good. If i start doing the Lost dvd's I will keep it down to 2 per disc though.

What i found strange, was that it need a bit of trial and error to get the compression right to fit 3 episodes per disc. In shrink when you slide the compression bar ti tells you the output file size, but then when it's done it ends up bigger! can you explain that?

I tried dvd remake but it looked a bit complicated, well for me anyway who has only used shrink before and anydvd fro dvd ripping.

please tell me about your methods though as i'm sure i can learn something.

Any troubles posting attachments here - that's probably the easiest way for me to show how I do it.

"What i found strange, was that it need a bit of trial and error to get the compression right to fit 3 episodes per disc. In shrink when you slide the compression bar ti tells you the output file size, but then when it's done it ends up bigger! can you explain that?"

If you're talking about nero express, I think I may know what you mean in terms of compression. If you're talking about shrink, I don't use it at all.

Looks like you have a modded xbox - maybe you could solve my connectivity issues. I've spoken with people around the world and still can't get two devices about 30 feet apart to speak to each other. Topic for another day (and probably forum).

I use clone dvd to split tv shows into 2 disks. It keeps the menus and the links, but they become looped to the menu if removed. This is the easiest to remove many extras on any disk (Trailers, FBI Warnings Etc.) Please not that it costs 30.00 and you must either rip the disks onto hard drive first or use anydvd in background as it cant handle css dvds on its own. they can be found at slysoft.com
