I have a Sony DVD player and a Pioneer DVR 810-H recorder with Tivo built in. When I want to burn a DVD, I put it on the Sony, record it to Tivo on the Pioneer, then burn it to disc on the Pioneer. I just learned about DVD-R DL double layer discs, and I want to start using them. However, my Pioneer rejected the DL disc as unsupportable. What is my best solution for burning DVDs and Tivo onto double layer discs?
Even if you replace the DVD burner with one that burns DL media, is the Tivo that doesn't know how to burn DL. Unless you find a firmware hack for your Tivo that would allow your burner to burn DL, you're stuck. You can burn the stuff onto DVD-RW and transfer it to your PC and then redo your DVDs onto DL, but that is a pain.
So is the best solution to buy a new burner/recorder that can handle DL media and a separate Tivo box, then sell my Pioneer 810H? If so, I guess I need to decide if it's worth being able to cut my disc usage in half by going with DL media from here on. From what I understand, there aren't any more "all-in-one" Tivo/DVRs made anymore - is that right? Would you recommend taking the plunge and going with a Blu-ray or HD burner? Can't those discs hold more than a standard 4.7GB disc? Thanks for your help.
No thanks. Didn't know they cost that much. Do HD players have special media, and if so, how much time does a disc hold in SP? Or are HD players made for regular media?
No thanks to $14/per, but thanks for the info. Just out of curiosity, how many minutes will an HD-DVD disc hold in Tivo time (i.e. fine, or highest, quality)? One 4.7GB disc will only hold 60 minutes in a fine quality Tivo recording, and when I burn a football game that goes over 3 hours, I have to use 4 discs. If a $14 disc will hold 7 hours in fine quality, I might consider it. What's the best solution?
Single layer for each Blu Ray 25GB HD DVD 15GB DL DVD 8.5 GB (about $1.5 ea )(this is dual layer not single layer)
