    Hey folks,

I bought a new dvd burner a couple of days ago, and I am having issues. I've followed a couple of really good guides from this site and have managed to get the movie I want ready to go at the right size for a burn. I have got it down to a VIDEO_TS directory with assorted VOB's, IFO, BUP, etc. that will fit on a disc.

Unfortunately, I've tried burning (using Nero burning ROM SE) 3 times, using different speeds (4X, then 2X, then 8X) and the same thing has happened each time. I put the disc into my home dvd player and the movie is playing at about 1.5X regular speed with lines across the screen. It doesn't do it on my laptop. My DVD player has played numerous burned dvds before, including the brand I am attempting now (Memorex, I know, not great, but they've worked before)and now I am at the point where I don't know what else to do. I'm pretty sure I know what kind of answer I'm gonna get, but I figured I'd see what people had to say. Once I get it working once, I know I'll be cruising, but I'm a "virgin" at this, so to speak. I just need a bit of a push!

I've searched the forums for any problems of this sort, but I can't seem to find anything which fits exactly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    W.E.

Most will say to get rid of the Memorsux.

It would be helpful if you gave more information.

    1. Is this a DVD rip of a commercial DVD?
    2. A downloaded DVD?
    3. A converted AVI file to DVD?
    4. What programs do you use?
    5. What processes did you use to get the final VIDEO_TS folder. (Explain what programs you used 1st program 2nd program etc. etc.)
    6. How did you burn the VIDEO_TS folder with Nero?

Things you can do to get a better burn...

Make sure your firmware is up to date.
Make sure you have updated stable versions of the programs you use.
Use quality media(Media that is most compatible with your drive)
Burn at 4x or half the rated speed of the media. (So if you have 4x and 8X then burn at 4x. If you have 16x burn at 8x)
    Do not multitask while burning.

You said you have it down to a size that will fit onto a disc. What size is that?, and what program did you use to shrink it down to the correct size?

*edit* basically what Larry asked and I was in too much of a rush to read carefully...

    Larry,

Thanks for your reply, I guess I didn't know where to begin with details.

To answer some of your questions:
It is a downloaded dvd, containing only a VIDEO_TS folder with all of the VOB files, etc. When I first downloaded it, it was ~4.37 GB, and so I just used Nero Burning ROM SE and attempted to burn it as is, as I thought it may have been pre-processed (probably a bad assumption, but hey, I'm very inexperienced). After that first failed attempt, I thought that it might be too big, so I used a guide involving DVDShrink, to get rid of the extra audio/subtitles. Then I tried burning with Nero again.

My method for burning with Nero Burning ROM SE is to start new DVD compilation> DVD-Video (all defaults)> then press New > it opens the explorer style screen and I drag all the files from my source folder to the VIDEO_TS folder in the project tree and press recorder>Burn Compilation. I've tried with a few different speeds (2, 4, and 8) and it finishes with no errors, yet doesn't play correctly. I'm betting on bad media, or am I just blind to the possibility of copy protection? I leave the machine while it burns, yet not coming out right.

    Thanks for your help!
    W.E.

Well you are correctly burning the DVD right in Nero. Plus your assumption should be true. It should be ready to be burned as you downloaded it.

This could be a bad download
your DVD burner/Home Player might not like the media you are using

Can you give more detail of what the DVD is doing? Does it always play slow? Or is it like freezing at certain spots?

I am going to throw this out there for you to find out. I do not know if this is the problem but someone else today had a problem with a downloaded DVD off the Internet and it ended up being a PAL DVD that they where trying to play on an NTSC DVD player. Can you find out and make sure what format the downloaded DVD was? (PAL or NTSC)

Other then that try doing the steps above that I have given to get a better burn.

Larry, the movie actually plays faster than normal speed, roughly 1.5x, and the picture is not centered vertically. It is almost flush with the bottom of the screen, with a wide black bar at the top and very little at the bottom. There are horizontal lines over the entire picture part of the screen, evenly spaced, and the screen is constantly flickering (kind of like a low refresh rate on a pc screen). It never freezes. I'm not sure what else to say.

You mentioned firmware being up to date. How can I check this? (Apologies for my ignorance).

    Thanks again,
    W.E.

You can check your DVD model # and firmware with Nero Info Tool.
You get to this by going to START/ALL PROGRAMS/NERO/TOOLS/INFO TOOL

After it scans click on the DRIVE TAB and at the top it tells you the model of your Drive. In the DRIVE TAB part it gives you the Firmware Version.

Did you check the downloaded site to see if this was a PAL DVD?

Larry, thanks so much for your comments.

I found the original source of the download, but the only indication that it would be a PAL movie is the fact that the attributes for the movie say Swedish and English language choices. If it is PAL, are there any programs which would allow me to convert it to NTSC, or should I scrap the idea?

I also just did a check of my firmware, and oddly, the model number of the drive does not match the model number on the box. Weird.

    Thanks,
    W.E.

    **Edit
Updated the firmware and giving it another shot. Thanks again, Larry.

What does Nero say the DVD Model # is? and whats the firmware version?

You can download CloneDVD2 from www.slysoft.com it is a 21 day free trial and load the movie into it and it will tell you what format the DVD is by looking where the image tells you to look.

If it is a PAL DVD then you need to use Nero Vision Express or a program like ConvertXTODvd to convert it from PAL to NTSC. You can get horizontal lines when trying to play a PAL disc on an NTSC system.

The model number was DRU-820A and the firmware was 2.0b. Updated it to 2.0d

The discrepancy in model number was due to the fact (by my guess) that it is an external dvd burner, but the internal working system is the same as the internal model of the burner, thus the same internal hardware.

I installed CloneDVD and will be testing it out. I'll keep you posted.

    Thanks,
    W.E.

Larry, just checked and it is a PAL movie. I have nerovision express, so I will try that out.

Big help! I'll let you know if it works out.
