Not sure this is the right place for this subject, but here goes What program do I need to convert Bin and Cue files to AVI files, What program do I need to convert VOB files to AVI files I dont want to write them to a disc, I just watch them on my PC monitor And one question, why are torrents put in so many different formats ? Bin and Cue, Vob, AVI, DivX, I cant actually see the point in so many, but just like to know WHY Thanks for any help/advice
You can use Isobuster (free) to remove the mpg and watch bin/cue: http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=141726:. WinAVI will convert vob to avi but I don't know if that's just to disc. You should already be able to view the vob on your pc, I'm sure I have. I don't know why all the different formats of torrents but I would guess they are what the uploader is comfortable with.
you can also use daemon tools (free) to mount the image and then ether watch the video or extract the mpeg. its better to just watch it when its mounted because if you extract it then youll have both the bin file and the mpeg file hogging hd space. if you extract the mpeg then erase the bin and cue file youll have to make another one if you ever want to burn it again. and as for the multiple ways people release things on bit torrent, it usualy depends on what it is... if its a low quality cam or ts then then the best way is to give out ehter bin and cue files, so even lay people can burn them and enjoy them on stand alone players, or in svcd or vcd or xvcd complient mpeg, so whoeve gets it can decie if they want to make a vcd out of it or just leave it on their comp. for tc's, and dvd rip's its usualy xvid, as it offers the best quality when reduced to fit on one cdr. it also saves bandwith. i hav never seens people give out .vob files, so thats news to me. once in a wile people give out whole .iso's, for a new fulldvd rip or something, but very few of the worlds population has dvdburners and iso's are huge and take up a load of bandwidth.
bin and cue is the same than having a CD-ROM. Therefore, since we are deling with video, it will be aither an image of VCD or of a SVCD. The application to use is VCDGear. But, since we don't still know if it's a VCD image or a SVCD image, it's better to 'mount' the image with Daemon Tools as georgeluv suggested. The virtual CD will be named the E: drive (if D: is your 'phisical' drive. Otherwise, F:, G:, and so on). 1. [bold]If on the Virtual Drive there is the directory E:\MPEGAV, the cue/bin is a VCD image[/bold]. In this case, select, on VCDGear, the command dat --> mpeg and extract the 'riff file with header' from the VCD converting it to a 'true mpeg'. 2. [bold]If on the Virtual Drive there is the directory E:\MPEG2, the cue/bin is a SVCD image[/bold]. In thsi case, select, on VCDGear, the command mpeg --> mpeg and extract the 'riff file with header' from the VCD converting it to a 'true mpeg'. After that, convert the MPG file to an AVI as you would do normally. When you need to do VOB --> AVI you can use the very simple program WinAVI or make it in a very complicated way using VirtualDub + many other applications, as we suggested in our http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/ page. About the formats, it's very simple. - AVI is the most popular format, compresses better than mpeg-2 (which is the DVD and SVCD format) but requires you have DivX installed. DivX is free for [bold]DEC[/bold]oding purposes only and must be purchased, for [bold]CO[/bold]ding purposes (to make AVIs). - cue/bin are simply CD images. The CD whose the image is, is usually a Video-CD [VCD, 352x240 or 352x288 for NTSC or PAL], or a Super Video-CD [SVCD, 480x480 or 480x576 for NTSC or PAL], like I said. VCD have too poor quality and are almost never found around. SVCD are averege quality (DVD is 720x480/576) but has a interesting feature: it is a 4:3 format but is 1:1. Why? Because the DVD Player, when watches a SVCD, 'litterboxes' the image so that 480 pixel in the X axis of the SVCD movie become 720 pixels in the TV. Therefore te 'apparent' screen becomes 720x480/576 which is like a DVD's. For this reason, SVCD are never compresed to AVI. A DVD player wouldn't know that the image should be 'litterboxed' and the aspect ratio would be wring. - VOB are the [bold]V[/bold]ideo [bold]OB[/bold]jects on the DVD, which has a directory named video_ts which us used for video DVD (and where all stuff is for simple movies), a directory named audio_ts which is used only for Audio DVD (and which, for movies, is emply). VOBs are: a mpeg-2 video (720x480/576) multiplexed to many audio streams (MP2 or AC3) to many subtitle stream. It is the largest object you can find, since a (S)VCD image is max 800 MB ('raw' image max size), a DivX is susally max 700 MB ('cooked' image max size; a DVD Player which can watch DivX loads simple data CD-ROM with an AVI inside it). A DVD is, instead, max 4489 MB. DivX is a very good movie compression format and a 2*CD-ROM movie (1400 MB) has a quality comparable to a DVD [even if, usually, AVI has only an audio stream selectable].
