Okay, I've got an issue that is puzzling me. Operating System: Windows 98SE Various software used: Clonedvd2 DVD Decrypter. Burner: Lite-ON 1613S +/- RW DL 16x Firmware: Newest version being that of S06. Owned and used period: Over a year of use. Media brand used: Office Max brand blank dvds. Issue at hand: When trying to burn any movie of mine to a blank DVD, my dvd authoring software (all of them) state: "invalid disc type for target." Problem happenned before the firmware upgrade took place. Troubleshooting I have performed: - right clicked the burner's icon with a blank DVD inserted, and selected properties. Result: Total capacity shown to be 1.9 gigs and not 4.7 gigs. Result2: The burner's icon changes to a "music cd" icon when a blank dvd is inserted. Result3: Double clicking the drive's icon with a blank dvd inserted, promotes this message: "no program asscociated." I should just see a white box with no contents. - Inserted a retail dvd movie, and checked the drive's properties again. Result: Total capacity was shown to be 4.7 gigs, and the movies play with no issue. - Opened up Nero Express, and had it create a data disc using a folder full of photos onto a blank DVD. Result: The burn was successful. Result2: Checking the properties of that burned disc of photos, the total capacitywas still shown to be 1.9 gigs. - Opened up the windows registry, and went to the SCSI section. - Found both drive registry entry folders (CDRW and DVD RW drive listings) Result: The contents of both drives in the registry show the exact dword and other values. Question: Shouldn't one of them be different than the other, since one can physically handle a larger capacity media to burn to? So, here I am now, stumped. What is stopping Windows from seeing the full capacity of a blank DVD, and changing the drive's icon to a music cd icon? Thank you for your time, Gamer2000
Such a confined little world isn't it. Your nick says "senior member", not moderator. But, to safisfy your troubled heart, I will remove the handle. Somebody actually does read the fine-print, go figure, especially when it comes to phrases like "this dvd is protected by...unauthorized duplication is punishable by law." I'm sure you are right on that one to follow the rules of. Ha. Gamer2000
Glitched, carefull on that statement as same could be said about you. just have to mention the forum rules & if a person doesn't follow suggestion about said forum rule, either pm a mod or do the offensive button.
You've got to be a teenager, for darn sure. Well, I'm 35 years old, and if you need to act childish and all, then go run tell big brother. Oh yeah, it's not a "post" to where my id was found, it's called a "signature." Enough with this already. Humm, I'm feeling harrassed. And, I believe that is against the rules here. Gamer2000
who makes your office max disks as might be incompatibility problem? is the firmware updated on the drive? what is the specs on the computer besides win98se? have you checked nero for updates?
i'm actually thinking it's a MEDIA problem here, gamer 2000, please do a dvd identifier check for the media ID coding on those Office Max brand discs...i need more info as to identify if it IS in fact "bad media"...for windows to NOT recognize the full capacity of the blank dvd COULD be related to 1. crappy media 2. firmware not up to date to recognize said media... i personally use dvdinfopro to identify media, but you could use dvd identifier or nero info tool or even dvd decrypter to identify the media...here is the link to the one I personally use, they are all the same and provide the pertinent information, take your pick http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvdinfopro.cfm good luck and let us know, i can go into more detail ONCE i know the manufacturer of your Office Max dvd blanks~
Hey Kivory666, It appears the the Office Max brand -/+ R's are made by Fuji. I've also went out and bought some Hypermedia brand -R's, and I'm getting the same result. Opening My Computer with blank DVD inserted... 1. Icon Shows the music cd icon. 2. Capacity of disc is shown to be only 1.99 gig. However, I can still insert a burned movie and a retail movie, and the correct icon appears for the dvd drive. Plus, the capacity of the dvd inserted is correctly shown. This is the most puzzling computer related event I've ever been faced with, and one I can't seem to conquer. The event of the blank dvds' capacity not being shown correctly has taken place before and after updating the drive's firmware. It's a Lite-on SOHW 1613S. It came with firmware version S04, and I've flashed it with the newest firmware, being that of S06. Could this be a registry issue? Thanks, Gamer2000
wow, gamer2000, this one has left me puzzled and bewildered...it MIGHT be a registry issue? i don't know what else to suggest... in terms of the media however, i don't think you took a step up with the Hypermedia brand dvd-rs KHypermedia DVD-R 4.7GB CMC MAG. AE1 8x (ouch) KHypermedia DVD-R 4.7GB CMC MAG. AF1 4x (and ouch again) i am assuming you got the Khypermedia...unless you got the actual "Hypermedia" branded discs which are EVEN worse than the KHypermedia ones: Hypermedia DVD-R 4.7GB AN30........ 4x (ouch a 3rd time) Hypermedia DVD-R 4.7GB LONGTEN 001. 4x (this one is simply HORRIBLE, even worse than the dreaded CMC MAGs above~) so, i don't know if it would be worth a try, but, your drive with the latest firmware MIGHT recognize a GOOD quality disc, such as a genuine Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim MCC coded one...while i do NOT think that even good media will resolve this issue regarding the reported total capacity size, it would be a GOOD idea to switch to more reliable media for future burns...that is just my 2 cents on it~ while it MIGHT or MIGHT NOT work, your guess is as good as mine...but, i would definitely switch medias for the future...perhaps windows 98SE is not recognizing your drive properly on random discs? not sure... to be honest with you, the Office Max DVD-R 4.7GB FUJIFILM03.. 8x media ID is NOT a good one either...despite it being a recognized name, FUJIFILM is NOT a good manufacturer...and this has been the media ID of MANY "shady" companies in the past...ie. AVB, Bulkpaq, Datawrite, Imation, Intenso, Memorex and a slew of NO-NAME companies... so, please take my suggestion with a grain of salt, for future burns of GOOD quality, stay away from brands such as Memorex, HP, Philips, store name branded media, and my personal hatred of TDK~ stick with the good stuff...Fuji (made in japan-this can be found on the wrapper...the country of origin), Sony (made in japan), Taiyo Yudens (available online or in the 8x dvd+r format FUJI and SONY, but MUST be made in japan), and Verbatim (made in taiwan). while this may NOT remedy your current problem, it WILL help in the future when you get your dvd burner up and working again...sorry that i can NOT assist you anymore as i'm out of ideas as to WHERE the actual recognition problem lies, but, trust me on the media aspect of it~ i KNOW my media VERY well~ good luck docTY~
