Blu-ray picture resolution?

Any FULL HD TV has 1080 horizontal lines by 1920 vertical lines.

This is the same resolution as with a blu-ray movie.

But many blu-ray movies when shown on a full HD tv, they are panoramic and therefore you get the black bars on the top and lower part of the screen. Therefore the actual blu-ray movie which is 1080 takes up about 800 or less horizontal lines on the tv. Is the picture still considered FULL HD as it is less then 800 lines not 1080.

Or is there more to this?

You're pretty much spot on... the black widescreen bars are still considered lines of resolution

So a pananoramic movie is not considered FULL HD as its actual resoluion is around approx 800 horizontal lines not 1080.

then why do they call it 1080?

 

Technically it's still 1080... 240 of them are black.

 

Question : i had a L.G.HDMI DVD Player and a new Samsung HD TV.The picture quality was Excellent .But i heard that the picture and sound quality out of the Blu-Ray player was something else all together.
i bought a blu ray player a week ago and i have to say the picture is NOT better that my old DVD Player..

My Question is...Do i have to get a FULL HD TV to see the different..

Your HD TV resolution is about 720x1333. So if you get a blu-ray player the most resolutoion you can get is at that. Unless you get a FULL HD TV.

Before buying anything. Just bring your blu-ray movies into a store and try to see the difference when your movie is played on a FULL HD tv, and a HD tv.

Blu-ray is better then DVD quality but its not WOW.

Thanks for bringing this up. I've never bought a widescreen BD and after this I still plan to stick to fullscreen.
