alright, so I just bought a new dvd burner because my other one crapped out on me. The problem with the old one was (what I thought) that it was just old, overused, and burned out. Whenever i would try to play a dvd, the computer would shut off, and this awful blue screen would come up saying "stop error" or something along those lines and that a "physical memory dump" was being done and this AWFUL noise would come out of the speakers. It had never done this before, but then it would only do this. I, after having this new burner for about a month, am having the SAME problem. I'm thinking that the driver I have for it is bad or something, but now I can't play movies, the dvd's i try to burn take 5 times as much time for reading AND writing, and this is just generally a pain in my ass. What do I have to do to cure this problem once and for all?

Sounds to me like you have several problems.

The longer time for DVDs could be caused by your system has slipped into PIO mode. It should be DMA. Check it following this guide:

The Stop Error problem could be cause by several different things. The system could be overheating, your RAM could be going bad or it could be your CPU or motherboard. First thing to do is check all your fans and make sure they are working. Especially, the one for the CPU.

Post back and let us know.
