I'm sorry if this question has been asked before (I searched but could not find an answer).

My problem is this: For at least a year or so, I've been noticing that when I play AVIs the picture tends to get blurry (grainy/vertical lines etc) when I use most media players, including WMP 10/11, WMP Classic, Real Player 10, Zplayer, WinAmp, WMP Classic, and a bunch of others. I have ffdshow installed. When I use VLC on the other hand, the picture is crystal clear.

The reason this is a problem is that I prefer to use subs with many of the AVIs. Apparently, there is a bug in VLC that makes it impossible to force the position of the subtitles down beneath the actual film (My tv is 4:3, so I perfer to have the subs under the film).

If anyone could help, I'd be very much obliged.

I would start by looking at what filters (decoders, video renderer, etc.) are being used.
