    Hi,
Now, it's kind of late, but I was wondering if someone could recommend me any good reads for my independent study project? I need two novels (both world literature, meaning its been translated from another language into English, or written by an author in an other country). At the end, I have to compare these two novels in a comparative essay. Now, I need two novels that will be quite easy to compare, it can be hard, but I just need novels that I know have possible comparable topics. Any suggestions? Sorry for asking, but it's kind of urgent :p.

EDIT: I was thinking Animal Farm could be on of the novels, but what world literature novel relates to it, a novel I can compare it to.

    Regards,

Very nice lists of book, but it doesn't discuss any books that could be comparable. You seem to read a lot Auslander, might recommending two books you've read that I could compare? Or a book comparable to Animal Farm? Thanks

to be honest, i would compare the themes in Animal Farm and any book with themes about corruption and the collapse of morality in power. the book is from a third-person point of view; for a character that openly analyzes such wrongdoings in a first-person book, i would recommend the Catcher in the Rye. one could use Holden Caulfield's views to emphasize the importance of the tragedy in Animal Farm. I'll ponder a while and see what else i can come up with.

thanks a lot man, was just looking at these books on amazon, wasn't sure though... so animal farm and the catcher in the rye... seem I am only in grade 10 (IB), and we are not writing advanced comparative essays at the moment... i would need to compare two contrasts in the novels, or compare one similarity and one contrast in the novels... if you understand what i mean, if i choose to do these two novels, could this be accomplished?

also, what abouts books like "All quite on the Western Front", and "Lord of the Flies"?? and maybe even "Of mice and men"?

i totally forgot about Lord of the Flies. that is the one to use. both books feature main groups that want to create a new, problem-free society where everyone is equal and counts. to contrast, one could say that in Animal Farm, the pigs take on the habits of former power-holding group (the old farmer or people in general, though still corrupt), while in Lord of the Flies, instead of "civil habits of a gentleman," the boys (of both sides, jack's more than the other) degenerate to a more primitive outlook and mindset, savagely doing their own dirty work and loving the bloody violence.

just to point out an interesting contrast, Animal Farm lacks any sense of sexuality, while Lord of the Flies embraces it. To be specific about one scene, think of when the boys are killing the pig; change the blades and spears to a male phallus when you're reading and you'll see my point (the not-so-subtle one the author was making).

that's all unorganized thought above. hope it helps. i'm just typing as i think.
